Goolam's obituary

Goolam Mohamed Abrahim (1953-2025)

Goolam Mohamed Abrahim, age 72, of New Brunswick, NJ, died at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital on Friday November 21st, 2025.

Goolam was born in Port Mourant, Berbice, Guyana in 1953 to the late Mohamed Abrahim (Brah) & Bibi Halima Abrahim (Irene) of Bound Yard, Port Mourant. Goolam attended Port Mourant Primary School and J.C. Chandisingh Secondary School. He then studied automotive electrical wiring & home wiring installations at New Amsterdam Technical Institute. Goolam then went on to work at the Rose Hall Estate Factory (Sugar Estate) where he repaired/serviced their vehicles. Goolam then joined Guy Construct construction company in Berbice. During this time, he also did side jobs, and in 1989 opened his own automotive repair shop in Cumberland. Goolam’s business became highly successful and he was awarded government contracts and traveled all over the country doing what he loved the most: fixing vehicles with his skilled electrical knowledge. After Goolam migrated to the United States in 1993, he continued to work for various companies such as Ken Diesel, Mack Boring, and D&W Diesel rebuilding starters, alternators & fuel pumps. During this time, he earned Automotive Service Excellent (ASE) certifications in school bus electrical systems, car electrical systems & truck electrical systems.

Throughout his vast automotive career, Goolam used his expertise to help friends, family, neighbors, and acquaintances repair & fix their vehicles. He would drop everything he was doing to help someone in need. Automotive repairs was truly his passion and Goolam embarked on countless rebuilding projects. He also enjoyed learning and mastering new skills. He became proficient in computers in his late 40’s and enjoyed burning music CDs which he would give away to family & friends to make them happy. Goolam also had a keen interest in karaoke in which he would sing Hindi Film songs and again share with his friends & family on CDs. Goolam always had an interest in health and would eagerly read the latest versions of Reader’s Digest. In his later life, he became engrossed in nutrition and greatly improved his health by adhering to a strict diet regimen. In his 70’s, Goolam once again proved that he was a life-long learner by mastering “toddler care.” He was a devoted grandfather who took care of his one year-old grandson three times a week.

Goolam simply loved people. He always had a smile on his face and brightened the day of everyone he met. Friends and family knew they could always count on Goolam to assist in putting together a piece of furniture, save them money by cleverly fixing their cars, or shoveling snow for them.

Goolam is survived by daughters Rehanna Abrahim, Rosanna Abrahim Vin (husband Kedar Vin) & Rafeena Sookram (husband Jai Sookram), granddaughters Arya Neha Vin & Mira Tara Vin, and only grandson Jaiven Sookram.
