Gloria's obituary

Gloria B. Perea, 91, of San Antonio, TX, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 7, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones. Her husband [Reynaldo Perea Sr.] of 71 years of marriage passed away on May 4, 2024. Born in San Antonio, TX, she was the daughter of the late Magdalena Luna.

She worked briefly at the St. Anthony Hotel in San Antonio and met her husband on a blind-date while he was at Fort Sam Houston for a brief stay. After marrying the love of her life on October 11, 1953, she devoted her time to raising her children and grandchildren while always being a faithful wife and maintaining a beautiful home for all of us. In her later years, she was also blessed with two great-grandchildren. She always gave without ever asking for anything in return and she always taught us kindness and the joy of giving. She displayed incredible strength when she was facing so many health issues. She inspired us to be brave - even when we thought we couldn't be - and she was always Mom first in order to make sure that we felt loved and that we were taken care of.

She filled our family home with so much love and always made the most delicious home cooked meals. After every meal, she would always say..."Thank you God." We all had our favorites, (too many to list here) but we can all agree that we miss her cooking. We really do.

Her rose garden was a very special place for her to spend her free time. So many people always complimented her garden and she was always so humble about it. Crafting was another highlight of who she was. All of us still have so many of her beautiful handmade items that brought her joy when she was making them.

All of us value the time that she spent with us, whether it was helping us with our homework or sitting in the backyard gazing up at the sky, and for that we are far richer than most people. Family has always been important to her and as we grew older, it always brought her so much joy when we called her or stopped in to visit.

Her sense of humor and laughter could always trigger a response from anyone, but more importantly, she always had a smile on her face. Even as dementia took more and more away from her, she never lost her smile and could light up a room.

She lived a life of simple pleasure and she always appreciated and valued the most simple of things. She is what every mother should be and she gave us such a beautiful life. All of us will always make sure to share her story with anyone we meet, in hopes that they will see and understand how wonderful life can be when you live a simple life

Her earthly presence is missed already, but knowing that she's free from pain and she's whole once more and with Dad, brings a sense of comfort to our Souls.

Enjoy your new home. We know you'll always keep watch over us and we know that one day, we will be with you once more.

Love always, your devoted family.

Gloria is survived by her children: Mary Dolores Vandervort, Yolanda Vargas, Reynaldo Perea Jr (Virginia), and Randy Perea, her grandchildren Jennifer Werner (Jonathan), Stephanie De Santiago, Reynaldo Perea III (Jackie Klein), and Brian Perea, her great-grandchildren Samuel and Evelyn De Santiago, her half-sisters, Sylvia Luna and Lillie Roman. She was predeceased by her mother, Magdalena Luna, her grandmother, Maria Ibarra, and her uncle Sonny, her son-in-law Henry John Vandervort Jr., and her son-in-law Raymond Vargas, and grandson (by marriage) Christopher De Santiago.

Interment will be held on Friday, December 20, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209, at Committal Shelter #4 (gate entrance located off Harry Wurzach). In lieu of flowers, please consider donations, in her memory, to the Dementia Society.
