Gloria's obituary
Gloria Elaine (Turner) Hammonds June 13, 1942 – December 26, 2024, of Canton, Michigan passed away peacefully in her sleep after several years battling cancer.
Gloria was born in Detroit, Michigan to Sylvia Marigold (Tuggle) Turner and James Edmon Turner. The family moved between Michigan and Arkansas a few times before finally settling in Michigan, where Gloria graduated from Lincoln Park High School in 1960.
After graduation she gained employment at AAA Michigan Insurance Company, where she met Dan Eugene Hammonds, her husband of 62 years, in the company bowling league. They married July 7, 1962, in the front yard of her parents’ Lincoln Park home. The temperature was so hot that day, the icing on the cake melted.
Gloria had a passion for life, especially music. She had a lovely voice that enthralled and entertained many over the years. She passed on her love of music to her children. She volunteered to play her autoharp and sing at her sons’ schools. Also, she would lead sing-a-longs on the many camping trips the family took. Gloria, Dan, and the kids would travel with the AAA Camping Club in their motorhome, crisscrossing the country over the years. When the kids got older, she inspired and supported their participation in theater arts. She volunteered to sew costumes, build sets, ushering for shows, and whatever else she could do to help.
Gloria also loved to read -- another passion she passed to her children. She loved her romance novels and would read several each week. She would research self-improvement books to strive to improve her and the family’s health. Gloria loved reading and studying the Bible and had a personal relationship with God.
Gloria has joined her parents and oldest brother Gary Turner in heaven, singing to their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She is not only survived by her husband Dan but also their 3 sons: Michael Dan (Michigan); James David (married to Taunya Burton, Wisconsin); and Jeffery Eugene (California). Gloria was also blessed with 6 grandchildren: Megan Leonard (married to Donavan); Erin Fay; Travis James; Jordan Mariani; Connor Nelson; Isabelle Nevaeh and 3 great grandchildren: Alice, Domenic and Norah.
Gloria was also survived by 3 siblings Rose Belman, Larry Turner, and Carolyn Harris as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
