Glenn's obituary
Glenn Willis Rhodes, 94, of Charlotte, NC, peacefully passed away on April 12, 2024.
Glenn was born on April 06, 1930 to William Ralston and Sadie Lee Rhodes in Harrisonburg, Va.
Glenn grew up in a farming community and learned at an early age that working a farm was not in his future. He spent summers working his on grandfather's farm bailing hay, milking cows and pulling weeds. One day it was raining hard and his grandfather left for town and told him to weed the garden. Full of dirt and soaking wet, he rode his bike back home only to have his mother clean him up and send him back. Needless to say he couldn't wait for school to start again.
He spent his free time hunting and camping in the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia and has always loved the mountains. He built his first of several mountain homes in Highlands, NC in the late 60's. He also enjoyed staying at the Pisgah Inn on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
In 1949 he married Ruth Leonora Flory of Dayton, Va. They went on to have 7 children, Donna Kaye Griffin (Jack deceased), Dale LaVerne, David Alfred, Infant son, Sara Jo Funderburk (Tommy), Joy Lynne Wild (Eric) and Molly Ann.
In the early 50's, he moved his family to Ocala, FL and started Sun Ray Hatchery. The business was successful hatching and selling day old turkey chicks. The demand for chicks was very high in Cuba and that was about 80% of his business. The Cuban embargo forced him to move to Athens, GA and his business to Ila, GA. As time passed, the industry became very integrated so he sold the business.
While living in Florida he noticed the price of farm land had greatly increased due to the horse racing industry. This sparked his interest in real estate which became his passion. The first subdivision he developed was Berkley Hills in Athens. Later he would develop River Haven and Fernwood in Oconee County.
While real estate was his passion, when times were bad in real estate, he was a sales rep for Fisher Stoves of Watkinsville. After Fisher Stoves he returned to real estate until he retired.
Glenn was very proud of and loved his family and his work. He was a hard worker and great provider, but he knew that there was more to life than work alone. In his last years, as he made new friends, he would always ask if they knew the Lord. Whether they did or didn't, he would make sure that they did. His marker will read Romans 10:13 "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
Glenn was predeceased by parents William and Sadie, 3 Infant brothers, brother Ray Lynne, Dale LaVerne, Infant son and Molly Ann.
He is survived by grandchildren Lauren Nicole Cain, Luke Benjamin Pritchett (Ashley Trigg), Carmen Lewis Louise, Christina Marie Louise, Shane Alexander Wild and great grandchildren Ashton Brandon Cain, Knox Braydon Cain, Scarlett Belle Cain and Baylee Rian Pritchett.
Services will be held at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church 5233 Will Wheeler Rd Murrayville GA 30564 on May 25, 2024 at 1:00pm. Grave Side service to follow.
