Glenda's obituary

Glenda Veca Kromer went home to be with the Lord on November 20, 2025, soon after her 89th birthday.

Glenda was born to John and Ellen Veca on October 6, 1936, in New Orleans, LA, where she spent the first third of her life. John was Italian, with a great sense of humor and joy of life, and a love of music. Ellen was Irish, with a love of cooking and a sharp wit who felt free to speak her mind. Glenda was a wonderful reflection of these two passionate people.

Receiving an associate degree from Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans, she worked most of her career in nursing homes and rehab centers, including working as Director of Nurses. She continued studies all her life, receiving a BA at age 53, and certification in Case Management in her 60s.

Glenda married Harry Kromer in 1961 and had three children - Harry, Steve, and Ellen - in New Orleans, LA. Her husband’s government job took them to Maryland where she raised her children with a strong sense of faith, family, and fun. Her husband’s job eventually transferred them to Texas, and she spent her final 25 years with family in Austin, Texas.

Her Catholic faith was very important to her, especially enjoying the masses of Easter week and midnight mass for Christmas. She studied two years at Trinity College for certification to serve as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector. She helped on liturgy planning committees. She received the Order of St Louis Medallion for service to the church, the highest honor bestowed on a layperson. Even after she moved to an assisted living facility, she continued to serve as contact person between the local church and the other Catholic residents.

Her faith was centered on the person of Jesus. Her favorite picture of the Lord depicts His face with a friendly smile, almost about to laugh. She’d point and remark “other pictures just show him too somber and serious, I like to think of him filled with playful joy.”

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Harry, brother John and his wife Mary Ann. She is survived by her 3 children, 11 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her nephew John, niece Laura, cousin Ken, and their families. Her devotion to family was strong, she would regularly pray for them and faithfully call all of them on their birthdays to sing Happy Birthday.

Her three children were together at her bedside the night before she died. It was her hope that when the Lord no longer had work for her to do here, she would simply close her eyes to sleep and wake up in heaven. And so, it was.

Memorial Gifts can be made to the Round Rock Serving Center (www.rrasc.org) an ecumenical resource for food and other assistance where she volunteered for more than 15 years.
