Amir's obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gholamreza Esmaili, known to all as Amir, who passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026, in Cambridge, Ontario, at the age of 65.
Born and raised in Tehran, Iran, Amir embarked on a journey that would take him across continents. At 17, he moved to England, where he learned to speak English, and pursued his education in Aeronautical Engineering. He loved playing football and joking with his friends. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Video Vision, a successful videography company where he captured countless weddings, special events, and was a regular videographer of greyhound racing and sports events. He was a deeply committed father, placing a high value on education and hard work, and standing by his children through good times and bad. His number one priority was setting his children up to be able to stand on their own two feet, which he was very proud to have accomplished. His guidance and mentorship will be something they always carry with them. In 2013, Amir moved to Canada to be close to his family, settling in Cambridge, Ontario.
Amir was proudly Iranian and carried his heritage with joy and pride. His kitchen was the heart of his home, where he prepared feasts of Koobideh Kabob, Ghormeh Sabzi, and home-made burgers for family and friends, always with the perfect Tahdig that became legendary among those lucky enough to taste it. His favorite moments were simple ones: drinking tea, watching his beloved Liverpool play, doing home DIY projects with his friends, and enjoying a home-cooked Persian meal surrounded by those he loved.
A man of warmth and generosity, Amir had an infectious enthusiasm for life's simple pleasures. He delighted in finding a good deal, engaging in spirited discussions about world politics, and traveling the world. His grandchildren knew him as Baba, the grandfather who arrived randomly with watermelons, fruit, and gifts, inviting them to pick raspberries in his backyard, pockets full of candy, and with an iPad ready for them to watch.
Amir was extraordinarily kind and loving, valuing time with family and close friends above all else. He loved his family in Iran, holding them close in his heart despite the distance. His close friends Manny and Mehdi were his home away from home, sharing decades together, and becoming like family.
He was predeceased by his parents, Gholamali and Mehri. Amir is lovingly remembered by his partner, Jeannine Gagne; his sons, Daryush (Michelle) and Kayvan; his cherished grandchildren, Leo, Eli, and Mia, whom he absolutely adored.
A funeral service will be held at the Islamic Centre of Cambridge, with burial to follow at New Hope Cemetery in Cambridge, Ontario.
