Trudy's obituary
Gertrude Brenda Washington, daughter of the late Mamie Israel Pierce and Laurence A. Pierce was born on February 13, 1939 in Amityville, N.Y. God called her home on Wednesday, August 2, 2023.
She was named after her aunt, Gertrude Matthews, but everyone called her “Trudy.” Regrettably, her mother died in December 1939. Trudy was raised by her maternal grandmother, the late Nannie Eubanks. Trudy was the youngest daughter of five children. Her siblings Louise, Dorothy, Mamie “Tootsie", and Ralph, preceded her in death. Tragedy struck again and her younger brother, George was kidnapped at the age of two never to be seen again.
Despite her childhood adversities, Trudy was a red-headed tomboy who sometimes got into trouble for her fighting spirit. Her bouts included boys and she was often the winner. When her beloved grandmother died from uterine cancer in 1950, Trudy moved to Brooklyn and lived with her older sister Louise and her husband Jimmy. She then moved back to Amityville and lived with her father, affectionately known as Pop Pierce, and his wife.
Trudy received her early education in the public schools of Amityville, NY. Trudy was a Nursing Assistant and Recreational Aide within the NYC Health Hospitals System.
Trudy was married to her soulmate, Isaiah Washington for over 61 years. From this blessed union there were three children. Trudy also helped raise her niece, Dr. Linda Burke.
Trudy was known for her voguish wardrobe matching her husband's debonair style. Her home was a place of warm and memorable entertainment for her family and friends. Trudy was also an avid bowler playing in multiple leagues in New York and Arizona.
Her eldest daughter, Deborah Denise Washington preceded her in death.
Trudy leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband, Isaiah Washington; son, Hayes Washington Sr.; daughter, Chalon; grandchildren: Trumina Foster, Nakia Marquis (Russell), Marquise Foster, Robert Washington, Nia Wright (Adam), Jasmine Washington (Prescott), Jada Washington, Jordan Washington, and Hayes Washington J Jr.; sister-in-law, Lazola Cope; brother-in-law, Julius Washington Sr.; niece, Dr. Linda Burke; 15 great-grandchildren and a host of relatives, & friends.
