Gerrit's obituary

Gerrit D. Schuring, 79, of Plymouth, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2025. Born in Michigan on June 24, 1946, to Rev. John O. Schuring and Gladys D. Schuring, Gerrit’s love of adventure and the sea began early. As the young son of missionaries, he crossed the ocean on a Dutch freighter from New York to the Port of Colombo in Sri Lanka—a journey that would kindle a lifelong connection to water, travel, and the stories found far from home. Gerrit lived a life defined by adventure, service, and an unmistakable sense of humor that could light up any room.

A man drawn to both sky and sea, Gerrit spent his career navigating the world from airline cockpits across the globe. He flew commercial routes for Midway Airlines and international carriers in South Korea, Alaska, and Egypt, bringing passengers safely home while collecting stories from every destination. Before taking to the skies, he worked in construction, as an underwater welder, and lifeguard—professions that reflected his deep connection to the ocean that would shape his entire life.

After retiring from aviation, Gerrit spent his final 15 years as office manager at Shields Healthcare, where his kindness, dry wit, and genuine care for colleagues became legendary. He was the person who remembered you liked ramen and made sure it was stocked in the break room. He called a sweet, fluffy puppy “Killer” and offered to train her. He checked in on people and made them feel safe. His presence was a quiet comfort during uncertain times, and his willingness to help with whatever was needed never wavered.

Gerrit made his home near the water he loved, splitting his time between White Horse Beach in Plymouth and Delray Beach, Florida, where he was never more than ten minutes from the waves. He was an avid student of history, a world traveler, and above all, a storyteller.

He is survived by his children, by blood and bond: Arend, Austin, Savannah, Karim, and Sherine; three grandchildren, Story, Descartes, and Phoenix; and his sisters, Rhea, Gwen, and Beth. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Johnny and Arnold.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to share your favorite stories and memories of Gerrit, where his humor, generosity, and kindness can live on through the lives he touched.

He will be missed dearly. Watch over each other as Gerrit would have wanted.
