Gary's obituary

Gerold (Gary) Wayne Stewart was born on April 6th ,1939 to Robert L & Dorothy Annis Stewart in Hutchinson, Kansas. Gary graduated in 1957 from Hutchinson High School. He joined the Army Reserve before the family moved to Lawrence, KS. While in Lawrence he met Sandy at the local Duckwall store and married 1 ½ years later on May 29th, 1960. The newly married couple moved to McPherson, KS so that Gary could pursue his education in Industrial Arts. McPherson was where Gary and Sandy started their family with their sons Mark and Scott. After Gary graduated McPherson College, he became a teacher in the McPherson school district for a new program called Special Education. He also taught Driver’s education during the summer.

Gary furthered his education obtaining a master's degree in special education from the University of Kansas during the summer for 4 years.

In 1966 the family moved to Topeka KS as Gary started a job for the State of Kansas Department of Education. The family only stayed in Topeka for a year then Gary took a job for the Missouri Department of Education in Jefferson City, Missouri.

While in Jefferson City, Gary and Sandy spent their spare time flipping their homes by utilizing his wood working skills. This hobby eventually led to them building their own home.

Gary earned his pilot’s license for single engine aircraft in 1973 and was able to fly to work assignments while working for the State of Missouri. The family also ended up taking a few adventurers with Gary as the pilot.

After a few years of working for the Department of Education Gary transferred to the Department of Mental Health.

In the early 80’s Gary transferred to be the Superintendent of Higginsville Rehabilitation Center in Higginsville, MO until retiring.

Gary didn’t retire long before becoming an entrepreneur by becoming franchise owners with Sandy of Furniture Medic and Servpro. Gary’s son Scott joined his parents in helping work the business in 1984.

Once Gary and Sandy sold their franchise, they helped Scott in the office with Stewart Remodeling and Construction until they finally retired for the 2nd time in 2018.

Gary in his spare time enjoyed woodworking and becoming an active member of Blue Springs Rotary.

Gary and Sandy moved from Blue Springs, MO to Olathe, KS in 2020.

Gary is survived by his wife Sandra Stewart, 2 sons: Mark (Sheila) Stewart, Scott (Stephanie) Stewart, Sister: Jan (Walt) Houk

Matthew (Jenna), Eric, Sarah and Jacob Stewart- Grandchildren, Ashely (Frankie) Moore- Step-Granddaughter

Blair Stewart- Great-Grandaughter; Ronnie & Ethan Moore- Step Great-Grandsons
