Geralyn's obituary
Geralyn Charisse Staten was born on January 17, 1963, in Dallas, Texas, to Rev. Julius Staten III and Rev. Thelma Staten. She transitioned peacefully from this life surrounded by her mother as well as her children, Julius Staten IV and Jaleesa Staten-Murphy.
Geralyn received her early education at Sunset Elementary School, Sierra Vista Elementary School, and Barcelona Middle School, before graduating from Alhambra High School. While in high school, she participated in extracurricular activities with all-conference, state considerations in track and field as well as softball. Following graduation, she entered the workforce holding various positions before beginning her career at St. Joseph's Hospital. It was there that she met her life partner, Alfred Gary.
Geralyn dedicated 18 years of service to St. Joseph's Hospital before continuing her professional journey at Paradise Valley Methodist Church. Determined to further her education, she enrolled at Everest College where she earned an Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies while working full time and caring for her three children. Geralyn began her administrative career at Paradise Valley Methodist Church, where she served faithfully for 12 years. She later joined the staff of First Institutional Baptist Church (FIBC), completing her working career with 14 years of devoted service.
A woman of deep faith and unwavering commitment, Geralyn was a member of FIBC for more than 40 years. During that time, she actively participated in numerous ministries including: Miss Jessie’s, Pastoral Aid, Women’s Choir, General Missions and New Members Ministry. Her willingness to help wherever needed left a lasting impact on her church family and broader community organizations like the Alhambra High Booster Club.
Geralyn will be remembered for her strong work ethic, her servant’s heart, and the boundless love she poured into her family and church. Her legacy with being dedicated to the cause will continue to live on through all who were blessed to know her.
She is survived by her loving mother, Rev. Thelma Staten; her life partner of 33 years, Alfred Gary; her children, Julius Staten IV (Patricia Bailon) and Jaleesa Staten-Murphy (Jerry Murphy); her siblings, Mary Jones, James Michael Taylor, and Cassandra Staten; and her cherished granddaughter, Penelope Staten.
