Gerald's obituary

Gerald Lee Rucks, affectionately known as Jerry, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2024, in Tucson, Arizona, at the age of 86. Born on June 10, 1938, in Aurora, Illinois, Jerry lived a life that was rich in experiences, love, and dedication to his family and community.

Jerry was the cherished son of Herbert L. Rucks and Gladys T. (Risvold) Hawbecker. His father, Herbert, passed away in 1966, and his mother, Gladys, in 2006. Jerry grew up in Aurora, where he developed a love for learning and a passion for service.

A proud veteran, Jerry served in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Europe and achieved the rank of Specialist-5. His time in the military instilled values of discipline and commitment, which became hallmarks of his character throughout his life.

Education was important to Jerry, and he pursued his academic interests at Aurora University, earning degrees in Accounting and Business Management. These qualifications paved the way for a varied and fulfilling career. Jerry retired after an illustrious career that saw him managing the family laundry and dry cleaning business, imparting knowledge as an electronics teacher, and serving the community by working at the Illinois Unemployment office, where he handled claims and minor adjudication.

Jerry was a man of many passions. Jerry was an accomplished musician. He played the marimba for which he won many awards and clarinet as well as timpani as a member of the Fox River Valley Symphony Orchestra. He had a love for flying and target shooting, and he was a devoted patron of the Chicago and Tucson Symphony Orchestras. His adventurous spirit took him around the world, as he delighted in exploring new places and cultures.

Community was a cornerstone of Jerry's life, and he was an active participant in several organizations. Jerry was a devoted member of the Church of Christ, Scientist and involved in its Christian Science branch churches wherever he lived. He was a proud member of The Sons of Norway, Norse in Tucson, The National Rifle Association, and The Illinois State Rifle Association. Through these groups, Jerry made lifelong friends and contributed to causes he was passionate about.

Jerry's personal life was marked by deep love and companionship. He was preceded in death by his beloved spouse, Carol A. (Umbach) Rucks in 2021, and his sister, Susan R. Steiner in 2000. He is survived by his devoted spouse, Clare G. Turner, who was his partner in his later years. He also leaves behind his dear sister, Nancy Kuechelmann; Carol’s sister, brother, and sister-in-law; his cherished nieces, nephews and their families.

Though Jerry's memorial service will be private, those who knew him will remember his warm smile, his unwavering kindness, and his ability to bring joy to every occasion. Jerry touched many lives with his generosity and spirit, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Jerry's memory to a charity of your choice, reflecting Jerry’s diverse interests and lifelong commitment to helping others. The inurnment will take place in the Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery, the U.S. National Cemetery in Phoenix.
