Gerald grew up in Long Beach, Ca. and graduated from Jordan High School. He was a cross country runner and received awards for record-breaking long distance running events. After graduation he worked for the forestry service in Eugene, Oregon, Zion National Park and then Death Valley National Park, where he lived for over 20 years. Though he remained single, he had many friends and an easy-going personality.
