Jerry's obituary

Gerald Calvin Hughes, Jr., 65, a resident of Cape Coral, Florida since 1999, passed away suddenly on Sunday, June 5, 2022. He was born May 23, 1957 in Burlington, North Carolina. After high school Jerry served his country in the armed forces, where he was posted overseas and gained a great love of Germany. He reminisced each year during the annual Oktoberfest in Cape Coral.

After the army, Jerry entered the wastewater/water treatment field. He worked for the County of Stafford's water treatment plant and held a position at the Atlantic Nuclear Service as a mechanic. Jerry worked for various water treatment plants before spending the last ten years of his career at the City of Fort Myers Water Treatment Facility, as the water plant supervisor. Sadly, Jerry's career ended early due to the development of lung cancer, with resulting complications forcing an early retirement. After beating lung cancer, he was able to enjoy his retirement for the past twelve years.

Jerry loved woodworking. He created an amazing array of precious pieces. Some things were as simple as napkin holders, others as intricate as custom decorated clocks or a custom chess set. He also had a great love of music and enjoyed running an MIRC music channel online for over twenty years. He introduced his family to computers. Jerry built and maintained computers throughout his extended family, as well as teaching his son about them. He was mechanically inclined and could always be relied upon to fix something that was broken.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald Hughes, Sr. and Constance Williams Hughes. He will be deeply missed by his family. He is survived by his devoted wife Dorene Pope Hughes of Cape Coral, FL, his daughter JoAnna Moody of Pinson, TN, his son Matthew Moody of Cape Coral, FL, Sisters Judith May (Thomas May) of Stafford, VA, Gwyn Mullins (Gary Mullins) of Ruther Glen, VA, and Brenda O'Brien (Marty O'Brien) of Ruther Glen, VA. Nephews, Brandon May, Stafford, Patrick Connors, Fredericksburg, Va. and Sean O’Brien, Ruther Glen, Va. Nieces, Erica Bunch, Stafford, Va, Alyssa Halderman, Ruther Glen, Va. and Kayla Potes, Culpeper, Va.as well we lots of extended family and friends.

A private family celebration of life will be held in Cape Coral, Florida in July.
