Georgia's obituary
Georgia is survived by her children Jolane, Kevin (Jeanne) , Dan (Chris) , Patrick, Nancy (Pertti), and Elizabeth Culhane (Tom) and her grandchildren, Julie Shoemaker, Jennifer and Kaitlyn Culhane, Connor (Stephanie) and Ben Culhane, Tim (Patricia), Evan (Alison), Leena and Stella Culhane Karjalainen, Caitlin and Alissa Millar. Georgia was also a Great-Grandmother to Aleeya Culhane, Jaxon Doonan, Dominic and Anthony Shoemaker, Audrina and Shane Chavez. Georgia will also be missed by her sister, Elizabeth Shattuck Johnson of Bonsall, California.
Born in Los Angeles, California on March 30, 1924, Georgia enjoyed a vibrant and full life. After graduating from Mar Ken high school in 1941 she became a professional ice skater, appearing for years with Sonja Henie and Ice Follies. Later in life, Georgia taught ice skating to children and adults in Big Bear Lake, California.
Georgia’s retirement years brought her initially to Santa Rosa and then to San Anselmo, where she enjoyed sitting in her garden, reminiscing about the ice show days, craft-making and sewing her own clothing.
Being quite the character with a huge heart, she made an impression on everyone she met, as she was very sociable and enjoyed conversing with people from all walks of life.
If you never met Georgia personally, you may have seen her: a tiny yet agile silver haired Granny sporting one-of-a kind, brightly colored pantsuits with perfectly coordinated shoes and purses. She made frequent visits to fabric stores, See’s Candies, and to the grocery store for several pints at a time of Ben and Jerry’s Phish Food.
Georgia was quite pleased that she had an ice cream dessert named after her at Alma Via, her assisted living home. “The Georgia” sundae is made with three scoops of ice cream topped with both hot fudge and caramel sauces. Try it sometime and, like Georgia, remember that it’s the simple things that count.
Throughout her life, Georgia showed great determination, resilience and dedication to the people who loved her. She was a convert to the Catholic faith, and looked forward to praying the rosary every week with Pastor Steve and her neighbors at Alma Via.
She will be greatly missed by her large family and all who knew her. She now joins her daughter, Constance, and her grandsons Christopher and Aaron, in heaven.
A private Celebration of Life will be held in Georgia’s memory on February 2, 2019.
