Steve's obituary

Psalm 126:2: “We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy…‘What amazing things the Lord has done for them.’”

Born to Luke and Nina (née Ditmore) Jones on February 18, 1954, George Luke Steven Jones, A.K.A Steve G. Jones, gained his heavenly wings on February 21, 2024. He was preceded in his heavenly journey by his dear son, Shawn Steven Jones, as well as his mother Nina, and father Luke, his brothers, Jerry Allen Jones, Henry Lee "Dee" Jones, his sister, Johnnie Barbara Sue "Barb" Herin, brothers-in-law Ernest Earlo "Ernie" Herin Sr. and Tony Lawrence Hughes, his sister-in-law Della "Diane" Blevins, and several beloved cousins.

His loss is insurmountable to his family, extended family, and fans. His presence will live on in the hearts of his son, Brian Todd Jones and daughter-in-law Kim Jones, his life-long twin-flame and wife for many years, Sue Jones, his granddaughters, Skyler Nicole Jones (Eli Steele), Sydney McKenzie Jones, Kylee Elizabeth Jones, his grandson Dylan Todd Jones, and his great-grandson Collier "Sage" Jones Gray, his sister, Mary Ruth Jones Hughes, his sisters-in-law, Charlsie "Dot" Jones, and Jill Fleming, his brothers, Jimmy "Jim" Larry Jones (Phyllis), Thomas "Tom" Floyd Jones (Rita), and Marvin "Wayne" Jones (Chris).

He also leaves behind scores of nieces and nephews, cousins, self-adopted family members, endless friends, and unknown fans whose souls are surely saddened by the loss of his earthly presence. His loved ones know his spirit will always live on in our hearts and in the minds of our big ole’ family’s future generations. Here on earth, loved ones can only hope to make Steve equally as proud as we are of him as his spirit continues to guide us through our darkest days.

To know Steve was to love him. The light that shone from his eyes lit up any room. He was never happier than when he was with family, except when he was with family and they were making music. It thrilled him to see his loved ones achieve their dreams. He had the fastest comebacks of anyone most have ever known. Even in dark times, he was a positive, motivating force who always provided laughter and hope. Simply put, he was the best of us.

He was a man of simple means, yet he lived his professional life with unrivaled passion, fierce dedication, and the utmost precision and grace. He was known by many to always seem as a ”man on a mission,” similar to a never-ending source of perseverance. He would often encourage others along the way (accompanied by a focused look and a sly grin) to “get the job done," no matter how difficult the task or what may lie ahead.

By living a life of vision beyond his circumstances and era, Steve left no dream unachieved. Through his works as a multitalented musician, sound engineer,  videographer, director, composer, songwriter, lead singer, author, and leader, his legacy—crafted throughout various mediums in his own voice and words—will forever remain. He was the lead singer and band manager for several diverse performing groups, including Steve Jones and the Joneses, The Winchester Band, Heart and Soul, and was a driving force for The Dixie Highway Band. He played on hundreds of stages, and thousands and thousands of people heard his music. He would not let up on the music, and he loved the challenge of just seeing if he could pull it off.

The impact of music is immeasurable as well as everlasting. During Steve’s time in Nashville, he wrote with Kenny Chesney, Aaron Tippen, and David Wills. Additionally, he wrote a duet sung by Garth Brooks and Doug Stone for the song titled "Out on Her Own" which was featured on Charlie Chase's album, My Wife, My Life. His song, “Sam Whisky,” was featured in the “Top 100” of Cashbox magazine. He was a Staff Writer for Charlie Monk for four years and thereafter became a Monk Music Publisher. He also wrote two separate country and western songs for the movie, False Identity, starring Stacy Keach.

He won additional countless noteworthy awards for not only country music, but also for bluegrass and gospel music contributions. One notable bluegrass song was with Charlie Sizemore, titled “Blame It on Vern,” from the album Good News. He was a former President of the Knoxville Music Guild. His most recent achievement was the gospel hit "11:59" recorded by Jeff Treece, which also gained national attention along the "Top 100" chart in gospel music. Now that he has achieved his heavenly wings, one can only imagine the added love, light, and music he is bringing through Heaven’s Gate!

As for the peace he felt about his current journey, Steve wrote in his own words:

"So, take my heart and my soul,

Where you lead me, there I'll go,

Lord, I can't make it on my own,

I'll do what you ask of meLord,

You own the air I breathe

And all of me, heart and soul.“

Steve recently shared a post with these words: "My instrument is my heart. My music is my soul,” by Corinne Montoni. In true Steve fashion, he insisted at the end of every show, "I Wouldn't Have Missed It for the World" by Ronnie Millsap, must be the last song - right before the stage went dark. Although we find ourselves in dark times, no one can say they'd have missed knowing and loving him for the world!!! Although the pain seems unbearable, the "dance" was so very much worth the heartbreak. God is in the sadness and the laughter, in the bitter and the sweet.

The family asks you to please share photos you have from his Celebration of Life, held at the Capitol Theatre on March 14th, if you were able to attend. Also, any other memorable photos you have, please share in the comments section below.
