Background
George loved his family more than anything. Growing up, he moved frequently and never had a stable home to call his own. Because of that, owning this house — our family home — became one of the greatest sources of pride and comfort in his life. It isn’t a large home, but it is filled with love and the memories my children and I have built here. It was the first place George ever truly felt rooted.
He also loved the land around the house. Early on, he built a fully harvestable garden and planted dozens of trees across the property — each one with intention and hope. As his health declined and before I was able to be here full-time, the yard became wildly overgrown, almost like a small jungle. Since my return, we have spent years working to restore the exterior: reclaiming the garden, tending to the trees he planted, and slowly bringing the property back to life.
Just as we began making progress outside, we discovered extensive repairs needed inside the home as well. We are now mid-restoration, trying to preserve and refresh the house so it can last for many years to come — for my children, for our future, and in honour of George.
As his health worsened, the focus shifted entirely to caregiving. Dementia, mobility challenges, and a long series of medical complications required constant supervision and advocacy. There were many times we felt like we were taking one step forward and two steps back, especially when navigating gaps in his care. For over a decade — and especially in the last four years — caregiving became my full-time role. I stepped away from work to support him, manage the home, care for my children, and navigate my own health limitations.
Now, as we face life without him, we are in a difficult transition. Funeral expenses, years of lost income, and the extensive repairs still needed on our family home have placed us in a vulnerable position. I am working toward returning to employment and qualifying for the mortgage on my own, but rebuilding stability will take time.
My greatest hope is to preserve the home and land George loved so deeply — the garden he started, the trees he planted, the place where my children have grown, and a space filled with countless memories. This home is part of his legacy, and we would hate to lose it after everything he poured into it.
This fund has been created to honour George’s memory, support funeral costs, contribute to a headstone/plaque for George and Shirley, assist with essential home repairs, and help our family through this transition as we work toward stability and renewal.
Any support — in any amount — is received with deep gratitude. Thank you for reading, caring, and helping us preserve the home and the living legacy that meant so much to George. If your donation is intended for something specific, please feel free to message me privately and I will be sure to apply your donation appropriately. Contribute
