George's obituary

George Walter Reese III, age 88, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2026. He was born on July 22, 1937, in Bartow, Florida, and spent much of his youth in Key West, Florida, where he graduated from high school in 1955.

Following graduation, George answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. He served honorably in the Army's 82nd Airborne Division as a Ranger infantryman. He was a senior parachutist and later joined the 5th Special Forces Group, earning the distinction of becoming a Green Beret. During his distinguished military career, he completed two combat tours in Vietnam. As his service continued, George transitioned into military intelligence within the Special Forces, rising through the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel. His career was marked by courage, discipline, and unwavering dedication to duty. In recognition of his service, George will be honored with full military honors.

After retiring from the military, George began a second career with Florida Farm Bureau Insurance, where he worked for 20 years before retiring. He carried the same integrity, leadership, and commitment into his civilian life that defined his years in uniform.

George was also deeply committed to the fraternity and brotherhood of Freemasonry. He was a devoted member of the Brandon Lodge for 42 years. He held a Gold Proficiency Card and avidly shared his knowledge of all three degrees of freemasonry and all three lectures with his brothers. He proudly served as Past Master in 1993, an honor that reflected his leadership, character, and dedication to service above self.

A man of faith, George was a devoted follower of Christ. He found strength and guidance in his beliefs and was an active member of Bell Shoals Baptist Church in Brandon, Florida. He attended Sunday service and Bible study, always learning and sharing the knowledge of his studies with others. His faith remained an important foundation throughout his life.

Outside of work and service, George was a true sportsman who loved the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, and scuba diving brought him peace and joy, and those who knew him remember his appreciation for nature and adventure.

George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy Reese, who passed away in November 2023 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was also preceded in death by his son, Mark Reese, who was born paraplegic due to George’s exposure to Agent Orange during his Vietnam service. Mark passed away in January 2025 from liver cancer.

He is survived by his sister Rose Gobbel; his son, George Reese IV; his granddaughter, Cheyenne Reese; his granddaughter, Melissa Smith; and his cherished great-grandson, Reese Smith, who brought him great pride and joy.

In June 2025, George suffered a major stroke from which he never fully recovered. He faced his final months with quiet strength, at home surrounded by family who loved and honored him deeply.

George Walter Reese III will be remembered for his faithful service to God and country, his devotion to family, his leadership within his lodge, and the legacy of honor, sacrifice, and integrity he leaves behind.
