Background
On October 1st, 2019, George went into the hospital in a neighboring town for a 30 min outpatient procedure for his Atrial Fibrillation, and due to complications during the procedure, he was admitted into the ICU. After 2 weeks of fighting he was on the mend and back to eating and was able to whisper visit with us, though he still had pneumonia symptoms in his lung (he only had 1/2 a lung since 1991) from the fluid in his heart leaking into the lung. At night he liked to sleep with his mouth open, so he wasn't getting the oxygen he needed through the nasal cannula. On the evening of October 13th he had a strap down oxygen mask (cpap type) placed to help ensure he received the oxygen he needed while sleeping. At some point in the evening, he aspirated in his lung from the mask. By the morning of October 14th, he was being life flighted to Domincan Hospital in Santa Cruz for a special type of ECMO life support. ECMO life support supported his lung and heart by oxygenating the blood. He had a roller coaster of treatment but eventually improved from the dual ECMO and was weaned to the ECMO variation that supported just his lung since his heart was doing better and he was also changed over to a trachea ventilator for his mental comfort. He was still battling MRSA Pneumonia from the aspiration and had other unknown infections being treated. He also had to receive Kidney Dialysis due to his organs being stressed from the amount of trauma his body was going through. After some more time had passed, he improved enough to be weaned completely off ECMO life support and he was able to sit up on the edge of the bed, in a chair, and was still very sick but had improved a good amount. Due to this, he had to go back to the hospital where he had come from. Once back, he did not do well anymore and slowly started deteriorating. His body was not healing anymore, especially his skin, and his body could not keep up with his spirit and his will to live. Sadly, on November 18th we had to take him off of the ventilator as his lung never recovered from the trauma and we were forced say goodbye to him and George earned his wings.
Our family has incurred a tremendous loss in his passing. We also have incurred a large financial burden stemming from travel expenses (rental car, fuel, supplies, food) and living out of hotels for 5 weeks, in an expensive town. We had some amazing family members on his side of the family who helped donate a good amount of money to help us breach the gap of the debt incurred, however, it did not cover everything.
Unfortunately, due to George's health ailments over the years though he was covered, he was under-insured due to the high cost of coverage for end of life events and medical costs.
George King was big hearted, fun loving, full of pride, a loyal friend and partner, a fierce father, and a man full of life. He loved to be the life of the party and in his life. Funds may not be very existent but he deserves a sendoff as special as he was, so we are still plan on giving him his due.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to his memorial instead.
Please do not feel obligated to help with costs as we don't want that, but we did set this up for anyone who is inclined who would like to help, as there have been many who have reached out to us asking what they could do to help out.
If you prefer not to donate through this site please message me at christaking@hotmail.com and I can give you alternative electronic payment options or a mailing address etc. Thank you for your support! Contribute
