George's obituary

George “Redwood” L. Hughes, of Somerville, passed away surrounded by his loving family on September 9, 2021, he was 89. Born in Springfield, Illinois, he was the son of the late George and Ella Hughes.

He was the beloved husband of 66 years to Susanne (Bellino) Hughes. Devoted father of Iona O’Brien and her late husband Jimmy, Joey Hughes, Mark Hughes and his significant other Jenn Thompson, and the twins; Keith & Kenneth Hughes.

Loving “Papa” to Krystal Hughes, Ryan Hughes, Courtney Martinello and her husband Ryan, Eric O’Brien and his wife Emily, Dallas O’Brien and his girlfriend Jazmin Wallace, and Halle Hughes. The greatest Papa to Shawna, Luca, Lena, Quinn and Emric.

Dear brother of Ralph and John Hughes. Brother-in-Law of Tom and Rita Armstrong. Cherished uncle of Cheryl Votour, Shawn Armstrong, and their respected families.

George received his nickname “Redwood” because over half of his life, he created custom redwood signs which “carved” his legacy. He enjoyed spending winters in Largo, Florida with his wife Sue and eagerly waited for his family to come visit. He also enjoyed watching the Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots, and Bruins. He was also no stranger to the dance floor either, even well into his 80’s you could find him dancing the Jitterbug, usually to his favorite song “Kansas City” sung by Fats Domino.

For many years, when asked how he was feeling, his favorite response was always, “above the grass… I hope I don’t have to mow it soon.”

Above everything else, he was devoted to his close friends and family.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Ann Church, 399 Medford Street, Somerville on Friday, September 24th at 11:00AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
