George's obituary
George Louis Heitman, 73, passed away peacefully at home in Altoona, Iowa on Monday, November 28, 2022. He was born April 1, 1949 in Marengo, Iowa to Milton George and Mary LaVonne Heitman.
George graduated from Iowa Valley, class of 1967. He soon after attended and graduated from The University of Northern Iowa, class of 1972 with a Bachelors in Arts and Teaching. He went on to teach many students in a variety of Arts over the years. He later began a career at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa for over 20 years in Surgical Parts and Delivery. At 50 years young, his passion for cooking led him to recieve a Culinary Arts Degree. He enjoyed his time as a chef and cooking for his loved ones.
George enjoyed all things art. He was most passionate about creating jewelry and pottery. He enjoyed his annual trips to the Des Moines Arts Festivals and was known to always come home with a new piece, tie-dye t-shirt and hat. Since retirement he enjoyed helping roast coffee, spending time with his children, playing with his Granddaughters, and sharing his love for sweets with everyone.
George was preceded in death by his Father, Milton, and his Mother, Lavonne of Marengo, Iowa. He is survived by his 3 children, Cole (Jessica) Heitman, Iisha Martin, and Arianna Heitman, and his 2 Granddaughters, Zoey and Quinn Heitman. He is also survived by his 7 siblings, Angela Heitman, Susan (Terry) Fultz, Stephanie (Ray) Manning, Leon (Joni) Heitman, Dwight ( Denise) Heitman, Mary-Pat Heitman, Renee (Don) Drost, many neices and nephews and their families.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 11 am - 1 pm Friday, December 9, 2022 at King David Lodge #407, 707 8th St SE Altoona, Iowa 50009. George would have loved everyone to celebrate his life and his vibrant love of art by keeping it colorful and wearing tie-dye or teal.
In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted for final arrangements and his favorite charities.
