George's obituary

On Wednesday, February 10, 2021, the Reverend Dr. George Lafayette Davis passed peacefully at his home in Coronado, CA at the age of 90.

George was born on October 3, 1930 in Seattle, Washington to George Lafayette Davis and Stella Jeanette Leaf with his early school years in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Air Force, Air Police Squadron, obtained his B.A. at the University of Denver, Master’s Degree at the Iliff School of Theology, and his Doctorate from the School of Theology at Claremont College.

George was an ordained Minister of the United Methodist Church and a California State Licensed Marriage and Family Counselor. He faithfully served the Methodist community for 42 years in churches located in Minnesota, the Rocky Mountains and California. For the last 26 years of his ministry, George was a Minister and Counselor at the First United Methodist Church of San Diego in Mission Valley and in addition to his ministry, he was a leading advocate in establishing the New Life Counseling Center on campus. Three of his proudest moments at the Church included the opening of the New Life Counseling Center, the dedication of the Memorial Garden and the marriage to his bride of 39 years, Mary Dietz.
George was extremely generous with his time and his community leadership service including Chairman of the Community Clergy Advisory Board, San Diego Hospital Association; National Chaplain, Navy League of the US; Chaplain, San Diego Council of the Navy League; Board of Directors, Veterans Memorial Center of San Diego; Advisory Board, Foster Parents of San Diego County; Board of Directors, Disabled American Veterans; Advisory Board, Scripps Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center; Chairman of the Religious Advisory Board of the Sharp Memorial Hospitals of San Diego and Grand Chaplain, Grand Lodge of Masons of California and Hawaii.

Over the years, George has been in demand as a public speaker, lecturer and teacher with themes focused on the Joy of Living, Attitudes that Change Lives, Hope and Optimism focused on a spiritual and positive outlook on life. His life theme is “Isn’t Life Glorious”. Known for his oratorial gift for poetry, George had the pleasure of uniting countless couples in marriage including most precious to him, many of his grandchildren.

After his retirement in 1999, George and the love of his life Mary had the opportunity to travel extensively, live in both Sedona, Az and Coronado, enjoyed golf, hiking, jogging and running, photography, activities with his children and grandchildren and any activity that “celebrated life”. George is survived by his wife Mary; daughter Jody; son Mark; 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren he shared with Mary.
