George's obituary
With deep sorrow we announce the passing of George Pierce Bedford, 86, of Flower Mound, TX, who passed away on October 26, 2024. This obituary celebrates and cherishes the life he lived and the legacy he left behind.
George was born September 28, 1938 in Abilene, TX to Goodner and Marian Bedford. He graduated from high school in Mobile, AL in 1956. He was a patriot at heart, serving first the Air Force and then the Navy with utmost dedication starting in 1957. This is where he learned Air Traffic Controlling which turned into his career. He met his wife, Jane, on a blind date on Jekyll Island, GA. They married in 1964, settled in Texas, and had two children, Pam and Mark. He left the Navy and joined the FAA in 1968 to continue Air Traffic Controlling, serving in many cities until retiring in 1989.
George was predeceased by Jane, his parents, and his siblings. He is survived by his children Pam (Kevin) Bryant of Flower Mound, TX and Mark (Beth Hamilton) Bedford of Sioux City, IA, his grandchildren Reagan Bryant, Ben Bryant, Christina (Everick Knox) Bedford-Knox, step-granddaughter Sloane Smith and her partner Shane Porter, and many other family and friends.
His personal interests were many, and he lived life on his own terms. From his favorite foods of seafood and pizza to his love for sweet tea, he embraced life with enthusiasm. He was an avid reader, especially of history, cook books, and books on birds. Classical music and 70's music filled his soul with joy. NCIS and Law and Order were his favorite TV shows, and he enjoyed watching James Bond movies and Clint Eastwood "spaghetti" westerns. He was an ardent supporter of Texas A&M, the Washington Commanders, and would watch ANY baseball game.
As a young man, outdoor recreation like hunting and fishing were his pastimes. After retirement, he enjoyed reading, watching TV, and travling with Jane. His favorite vacation spot was anywhere a cruise would take them. While his favorite color was blue, he was a vibrant palette of life in himself.
He chose many years ago to donate his body to science in the hopes of improving the lives of others. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to express sympathy consider donating to the Alzheimer's Association or American Heart Association.
A memorial service in honor of George will be held on June 14, 2025, at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church of Hot Springs, AR. It is a time to remember, honor, and cherish the beautiful soul that was George Bedford.
