Gary's obituary
He was born in Elgin, IL on September 5, 1940. He lived through the loss of his father in WWII, and was always thankful for his maternal grandfather, who was his father figure in his life.
He attended St. Mary’s Grade School and St. Edward’s High School before graduating with a BA degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1962. He retired in 1997 from Videojet (formerly Cheshire) in Wood Dale, IL after a long career in the information systems.
He and his first wife, Irene (Penny) Rover, had six children, living most of the years in Hoffman Estates, IL. Penny preceded him in death on March 28, 2020. Throughout 1973-1984 he was very involved with the Hoffman Estates Athletic Association serving as a coach and board president. He was a parishioner of St. Hubert’s Catholic Church and served on the school board.
Gary remarried on April 11, 1986 to Anne Hogan, increasing the family with three more sons. They spent many happy years traveling in their motor home. Their travels included all 48 contiguous states, Alaska, all provinces of Canada and four states of Mexico visiting the Copper Canyon on a caravan via flat-bed train cars. They settled in Fountain Hills, AZ in 1999 and retired the motor home, except for travels in the USA, mostly visiting their children and grandchildren.
Gary became very active in their HOA and spent many years as the president. He became active in the Progressive Men’s Club in Fountain Hills and the Democratic Club of Fountain Hills and Scottsdale. He also was active in the Care for Creation Ministry at the Franciscan Renewal Center, affectionately known as the CASA in Paradise Valley/Scottsdale.

People come and go throughout our lives. We allow them to bring us joy, insight, love, guidance and even pain. The special ones touch us in a deep and meaningful way.
Gary was one of those special ones. The vastness of his heart and his mind touched not just those close, but truly so many more. To say he will be missed does not encapsulate the scope of his influence. His energy now flows with that infinite field of energy and will continue to influence those he touched, it truly will leave a mark.
Gary donated his body to Science Care. A memorial service will be held at a later date, due to COVID -19.
Donations in his honor may be made to St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance of Phoenix.
