Gary's obituary

Gary Alan Wilkinson passed away on January 19th, 2022 at the age of 66 in Chesterton, Indiana. Gary was born in Dearborn Michigan on September 5, 1955 to proud parents Rollo Gene Wilkinson and Marilyn Anna (Lighthall) Wilkinson. Gary was preceded in death by grandparents Ernest Jack Wilkinson, Mabel Wilkinson, Lloyd Lighthall and Mildred Lighthall, Aunt Evelyn Pauley and Cousin Betty Drake.

Gary is survived by his parents Rollo and Marilyn Wilkinson and by his loving wife of 15 years, Sharon Hawk Wilkinson. He was a proud father of Erica (Will) Jones, Andy (Jodi) Wilkinson, and Eric (Syndy) Nance. He is missed by his grandchildren: Jack Teibel; Robyn Jones, Wyld Jones; Zack Wilkinson, Elsie Wilkinson; Izaac Nance, and Taylor Nance. He is survived by his sister Jan (Kevin) Green and his brother Jeff (Jayne) Wilkinson, as well as his many nieces and nephews.

Gary was a proud graduate of Michigan State University where he held the record for Goalkeeper with the most career shutouts over a 4-year career from 1978-2006 for the MSU soccer team. After graduating with his Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, he continued his education and completed his Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Illinois Chicago. Gary expanded his career by becoming licensed as a professional engineer in three States: Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. He led a solid, strong, and lasting career in mechanical engineering working in energy, cogeneration and designing power plants. Gary’s reach extended across the United States, however that was not enough, his projects expanded globally including designing power plants for skyscrapers in Dubai. Gary retired in 2018 with many incredible accomplishments, publications, stories and friendships.

Gary worked hard, played hard, and had a fantastic sense of humor. Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is one testament to his character. He loved soccer, sailing, traveling, bike riding, and spending time with his family. Gary found great enjoyment volunteering with the local Meals on Wheels and traveling during his retirement. Gary and Sharon could be found crossing the country multiple times a year, taking extended stays in different states, spending time with their Grandkids and visiting Presidential museums along the way.

Gary will be greatly missed by all whose life he touched.

A Celebration of Life will be held at St Matthew’s United Methodist Church in Livonia 30900 Six Mile, Livonia, MI 48152 on Monday January 31st, 2022 at 11:00am.
