Gary's obituary

Gary Paul Townsend, son of the late Reverend George Washington Townsend and Margaret Elizabeth Townsend, was born in Baltimore, MD on June 30, 1948 and entered fully into the presence of his Lord and Savior in York, PA on November 13th, 2018 at the age of 70. Gary had an unwavering faith in God that showed through his great devotion to his family and friends. His final days were spent surrounded by the love of the people to whom he was devoted.

He was the loving husband to Cathy L. (Davis)Townsend with whom he shared 49 years of marriage. Gary is also survived by his daughter, Jennifer D. Wilson and her husband Greg; two sons, Andrew P. Townsend and Timothy J. Townsend; as well as one granddaughter, Marah L. Townsend. Gary is also survived by three brothers; Charles Townsend and wife Patty, Wayne Townsend and wife Arlene, Dr. Reverend Hugh Townsend and wife Linda; one sister, Jean Therit; and many nieces and nephews.

Gary was immersed in the Christian community that would be his lifelong support from an early age. As a follower of Christ, Gary attended Living Word Community Church and The Seed of Abraham Messianic Congregation where he was a Prayer partner. Throughout his faith walk he was an appointed Deacon at many Baptist Churches where he regularly taught Bible studies and adult Sunday School classes. Gary also served at EXIT with Spirit and Word Ministries.

Gary earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Towson University and had a successful 35-year career as a banker. He also spent 4 years as a consultant with BB&T Bank. He was a member of The Rotary Club of York. Gary volunteered as treasurer of the Margaret E. Moul Home in York and the 4H Club in Howard County, MD, and was a board member of the Christian School of York.

In his spare time, Gary loved to play golf and ride motorcycles. Gary enjoyed traveling and often took extended motorcycle trips. He also enjoyed traveling to the beach. He engaged in bird watching, playing cards and board games, reading his Bible, telling jokes and spending time with his many dogs.

Gary was a man of deep faith, believing in the power and strength of Jesus Christ's love and the beauty and peace that would await him after passing. He loved others deeply and he was a devoted husband, father and friend. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed by us all.
