Gary's obituary
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Mr. Gary "Stet" Stettler, who left us too soon on the morning of November 18, 2023. Well known as Gary although his brothers in the Navy knew him as Stet, he was born on February 11, 1964, to his late parents, Ofa Boyd Tanner and Ernie Tanner.
He is deeply missed by his beloved wife, Michelle Stettler, who he married on the island of Mau'i in 2000. He is profoundly remembered by his three daughters, Megan Stettler, Tiffany Munsterman and companion, Cody, and Anna Rhodes and husband, Tyler. Gary is survived by his brothers, Bruce and Paul Stettler of Indiana. The outpouring of love from his family and friends is a testament to the bonds he created and nurtured throughout his life.
In 2009, Gary retired from the United States Navy where he served his country with exemplary dedication as a submariner for 24 years, attaining the rank of Chief. It is truly remarkable that despite traveling around the world and defending the home of the brave, he considered his family as his most significant accomplishment. This praising testament speaks volumes about Gary's humble nature and deep love for his family.
Gary enjoyed a good laugh and loved to tell sidesplitting stories. He was a strong silent type whose witty jokes always filled the room with laughter. His interests extended to recreational activities such as cooking amazing meals for his family and trying new things. He cherished moments of relaxation, savoring those quiet moments with the ones he loved.
Family trips to the beach were particularly memorable times for Gary. His distinctive wisdom has left enduring lessons for all of us – to stand up for what's right, to always tell the truth, and to demonstrate respect in all walks of life.
Gary leaves behind a rich legacy; a robust family unit that will continue to grow and prosper in the foundations he laid. He would welcome his first grandchild in May 2024, a baby boy will always know his guardian angel as Pop. Gary's influence will remain in the many lives he enriched, demonstrating the lasting impact he made. A keen collector of books and souvenirs from his adventures, Gary's library was a faithful reflection of his personality – quiet, incredibly thoughtful, and full of depth.
If you were Gary's friend, you were his family. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate his life, honoring his many achievements and the immense love he had for all of us. His memory lives on in all those he leaves behind, and he will be forever missed.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1pm on Saturday, December 2nd in Harrisonburg VA. Please RSVP as we have many traveling guests and need to fully accommodate all who wish to say their goodbyes. Thank you for your continued love and support.
