We served together in the Air Force at DM. He was in the Structural Repair shop and I in the Machine shop. I recall when he had the misfortune of getting a finger caught in the jam of a swinging door of the shop office,  severing the tip! A quick trip to the hospital to reattach the tip and back to work he came! A tough guy who always made us laugh. My condolences to Gary's family.
