Born in Canton, NC, he was the son of the late Rev. Elmer Franklin Keener and Irene Ward Keener, and husband of Patrice “Pat” Keener, who were married on October 1, 2013. He was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church, and enjoyed the preaching and music programs there.
Gary was a graduate of Canton High School and Georgia Institute of Technology, with BS degrees in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. He was a super fan of Georgia Tech football, watching their games in person or on TV. He worked for several companies throughout his engineering career, including: American Enka in Clyde, NC; Flexible Technologies in Abbeville, SC; Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, NC; Dayco in Waynesville, NC; Cerock Wire in Troutman, NC; Hollingsworth in Mauldin, SC; and Fluor in Greenville, SC. In addition to his normal work schedule, Gary also served as Minister of Music to several churches, including: Southside Baptist in Abbeville, SC, Fairplains Baptist in North Wilkesboro, NC, Northside Baptist in Greenwood, SC, and Callie Self Memorial in Greenwood, SC. Gary also served in the National Guard in North Carolina from 1960-1966, attaining the rank of Sargeant-E4.
Surviving, in addition to his wife are two sisters and their husbands, Anita and Howard Messer of Lancaster, SC, and Marsha and Jack Moran of Bessemer City, NC; four sons and their wives, Sherwin of Greenwood, SC, Bryan and Alicia of Greer, SC, Rick and Lori of Taylors, SC, and Kevin and Lisa of Longwood, FL; and seven grandchildren, Katelyn, Kaleigh, Will, Zach, Drew, Alex and Nick; and his best buddy Rusty, his 17 year old Yorkshire Terrier who loved to sit on his lap and chase away “intruders”.
We greatly appreciate the health care services that Gary received from St. Francis Hospital - Downtown Greenville and the Easley Dialysis Center.
A Memorial Service was held on Monday, Sept. 9 at 2:00pm in the Rock Springs Baptist Church Chapel in Easley.
