Gary Allen Haltom

March 27, 1944 — April 26, 2024

Indianapolis

Gary A. Haltom of Indianapolis, IN, passed away on April 26, 2024, at the age of 80 from complications related to leukemia. Gary was born in Morgan County, IN on March 27, 1944, to parents, Basil and Wanda (Tumey) Haltom. He graduated high school from Arsenal Tech and attended Purdue University. Gary worked for the Marion County Auditors Office, IBM, American Fletcher National Bank, Chase, and smaller investment firms over 35 years, starting in card punch programming and ultimately retiring as a Vice President of Business Development. Gary’s work ethic and determination enabled him to be a mentor who empowered others to reach their full potential. His professional influence postively touched the lives of so many.

Gary always put family first, making sure everyone felt welcomed and loved in his home. His legacy includes cherished family traditions and a house that was a gathering place for all. He is survived by his wife of more than 52 years, Sherry Lynn Faust Haltom and his children: Shawn (Ellen) de Long, Laura de Long (Dean) Butgereit, Jeffrey (Allison) Haltom & Craig (Becky) Haltom. He will be missed every day by his 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and an extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Basil and Wanda (Tumey) Haltom and two sisters, Donna (Edward) Patton and Saundra (Danny) McMahon. He is also survived by siblings Patricia (Noble) Wickliff and Karen (William) Spell Zink.

Gary lived a life marinated in friends, family and love. He enjoyed sports, coaching, playing games, camping, stock trading and researching the history of the Haltom family. His was honest, fiercely loyal and abundantly generous. Gary embodied a legacy of “never giving up”. He fought cancer and leukemia for many years, embracing life and continually beating the odds over and over against a relentless disease. Even on the most difficult of days, he found joy and humor in the smallest moments.

Visitation will be held from 12pm – 2pm, Friday, May 3, 2024, at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East (10722 E. Washington St. Indianapolis, IN). A Funeral Service will be held at 2pm at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East. He will be laid to rest near his parents and other family members at Washington Park East Cemetery.
