Gary's obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary Michael Calcagno. Surrounded by the love of his family, Gary was called home to be with his Lord and Savior in the early morning hours of August 2, 2025 at the age of 77.  He is leaving behind a profound legacy of kindness, service, and devotion.

Born in Stockton, California, on September 14, 1947, Gary was the youngest son of Gene Calcagno and Lois Calcagno Allard. Alongside his parents and older brother, Ronald, Gary grew up in the small town of French Camp, CA.

Gary pursued his vocation with determination, attending night school to become an electrician. His dedication to his craft left an indelible mark upon countless homes, businesses, and structures throughout the region. As a dear friend and pastor said, "his fingerprints are everywhere." Gary was always ready to answer the call when someone was in need, whether it was installing a simple outlet, re-wiring an entire house or just helping someone in need with his many talents. His work quite literally brought light to the lives of many.

Beyond his professional achievements, Gary found immense joy in nurturing his garden. He took pride in sharing the fruits—and vegetables—of his labor, generously gifting family and friends with artichokes, potatoes, zucchini, garlic, onions, and much more. His love of growing things extended to fruit as well, his harvests a reflection of his nurturing character. He also had a talent for crafting wine and beer-a skill he took seriously and worked hard to perfect. He built his own wine cellar at home, where he proudly invited friends and family to sample his creations. It wasn’t about showing off; it was about sharing something he put time and care into. Those visits to the cellar weren’t just about drinks-they were about good conversations, quiet laughs, and time well spent with the people he cared about.

A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Gary was endlessly creative in sharing his passions with those he loved most. As the father of three daughters, he devised new ways to spark their interest in his favorite pastime: fishing. This led him to craft custom fishing rods, coveted by friends and family alike, each rod a testament to his skill, patience, and thoughtfulness. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, passing down his wisdom and knowledge. He had a nickname or phrase that he would call his grandchildren when he saw them. Jacob – Jacob My Man, Emma – Emma Lou, Donovan – Nutty Buddy, and Ayla – Snicklefrits.

Gary is lovingly remembered by his wife of over 56 years, Sue Calcagno—his "bride," as he fondly called her. His memory lives on in the hearts of his daughters Dionna Villavicencio (Leonardo), Gina Calcagno-McKay (David), and Angela Marquez; his grandchildren Jacob Marquez, Emma Villavicencio, Donovan McKay, and Ayla Marquez; and his brother Ronald Calcagno (Debbie). He is preceded in death by his father, Gene Calcagno, his mother, Lois Calcagno Allard, and many beloved family members who have gone before him.

Although he lost his battle with metastatic melanoma, he selflessly chose to donate his body to UC Davis for research, hoping it might help even one person facing this devastating disease.

Though Gary’s presence will be deeply missed, the memory of his unwavering generosity, his infectious laughter, and his strong faith will continue to inspire all who knew him.
