Garvin's obituary
Garvin Ray Burris was born in Gaines County, TX on January 17, 1935. At 18, he enlisted into the U.S. Air Force. While in the service, he was stationed at bases from Japan to Guam and points from Alaska to Texas, where his appreciation of other cultures began. While stationed at Cannon Air Force Base near Clovis, NM, he attended cosmetology school where he met his future wife, Betty. He went in for a Barber’s License but came out with a Marriage License instead! After retiring from the Air Force, Garvin and Betty moved to Keller, TX, and became Houseparents at Christ’s Haven Home for Children where they served for 12 years. Garvin also attended the School for Practical Evangelism. His involvement in personal work included: one on one Bible study, correspondence courses, and mission trips to such places as South Africa, New Zealand, Belize, and more. While stationed in Alaska he received his Barber’s License. Over the years, Garvin sharpened his skills as a Barber and Joke Teller. In 1991, he opened GARVIN’S BARBER SHOP where he looked forward to cutting hair and sharing a laugh or two for over 30 years.
Garvin Burris was a jack of all trades, the Prince of traveling nomads and the King of corny jokes. Most of all he was a faithful Christian, family man and friend.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty Burris, his four children, LeLani Harris and husband Jim Harris, Tanya Bennique Blasini and husband Steve Blasini, Shawni Burris and Kirk Burris. Also, he is survived by three grandchildren: Shannon, Aaron and Heath Harris - along with 2 sisters, Ethelyn Vernon and Sue Daniels and many nieces and nephews.
