Garry's obituary
Garry Henry Dargan, aged 73, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2025. Born on August 30, 1951, in Boston, MA, Garry was the son of the late Francis (Frank) and Ita (Carew) Dargan.
A proud graduate of Boston Vocational Technical Institute. In 1977 Garry embarked on his next adventure joining the U.S. Secret Service for 25 years. In 1999 he served as a Special Officer through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. His career took him all over the United States and to many foreign countries and obscure locations, showcasing his unwavering commitment and dedication to serving his nation.
Garry's life took an unexpected yet beautiful turn when, during his time in Washington D.C., he met Marie Rutherford, a Scottish bartender, at their favorite Irish pub, Matt Kane's. Little did he know that Marie would take him on the ride of his life and would forever change his. On September 12, 1981, Garry and Marie married, and together they welcomed two daughters, Jacqueline in 1982 and Jennifer in 1983. Garry was a devoted husband, father, and, true to his nature, a purveyor of dad jokes.
Garry was a true history enthusiast, with a remarkable knowledge of Washington, D.C., and its rich historical landmarks. He was known for being the best tour guide, captivating family and friends with stories about every building in the city and the history behind them. His passion for history extended beyond his tours. Garry was also an avid coin collector and a talented artist, though many were unaware of his hidden creative skills.
Above all, Garry was a family man. He found immense joy in spending time with his loved ones, especially when gathered around the table for a meal. Garry was an exceptional cook, and breakfast was his specialty—something he lovingly prepared for family and friends who gathered in his home. He particularly enjoyed the moments spent eating and laughing together on the back deck of his home, where he created lasting memories with those who mattered most. He welcomed everyone into his home with a warm greeting, and if you were a childhood friend of his daughters, you probably received a “hey kiddo”. His kindness extended to his love for animals, especially dogs.
Garry is survived by his wife of 43 years, Marie; his children, Jacqueline (and her husband Rob) and Jennifer (and her husband Eddie); his sister Fran Misagal; his nephew and niece, Louie and Mandy; his brother Tom Dargan (and his wife Susan); and many beloved family members in the U.K. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Ita Dargan.
Garry lived a life full of love and devotion to his family, country, and community. He was known for his charitable heart and gentle soul. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The Dargan Family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of support and kindness during this difficult time. Your love and presence have been a great comfort to us.
A Celebration of Life will be held on March 8, 2025, at the Dargan Residence, where family and friends will gather to honor and celebrate Garry's life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Boys Town. A charity that was dear to Garry.
Rest in peace, Garry. You will always be in our hearts.
