Garland's obituary
Garland William Floyd was born April 17, 1956 to parents Lola Garland Floyd and Cluiss William Floyd, both preceding him in death. He also has one sister, Gerri Floyd in Chicago. A cherished Chicagoan and Fisk University alum in Political Science, Garland enjoyed a vibrant journey that spanned from the bustling streets of Chicago to the heart of Oklahoma City. An indelible mark was felt by many, including his significant other, Cynthia Moore, who was by his side in his final days.
After graduating from High School, he ventured to Fisk University, fostering connections from the neighborhood to college and beyond. A paralegal by profession, Garland's passion for education thrived when he moved to Oklahoma, guiding students toward promising careers.
Blessed with two beautiful daughters, Jasmine Floyd and Marilyn Gooch (and their mother, Lawanda Gooch), and adored granddaughters Shannon and Erykah, along with great-grandchildren Rashad and Rhylee, Garland's family was his source of joy.
His love for Blues music took center stage as he promoted shows in Nashville and contributed significantly to the Chicago Blues Hall of Fame. Garland's legacy lives on through his sister, sister-in-law, daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, significant other, and a network of cherished friends and relatives.
A celebration of Garland’s life will take place at University Church on Friday, December 15, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. As we gather to honor his memory, may his passion for learning and connection endure in our hearts.
