Gary's obituary

Gareth “Gary” Lee Vierus (1956–2024)

On the morning of January 18, 2024, Gareth “Gary” Lee Vierus, 67, beloved Son, Brother, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle, Cousin, and Friend, passed away, unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep at his home in Cypress, TX. Gary was born on November 8, 1956, to Leon and Mercedes (Luetge) Vierus in Brenham, TX. He was baptized on March 24, 1957 at Friedens United Church of Christ in Washington, TX, and later confirmed his Christian faith in the same church on April 4, 1971. His chosen memory verse was Romans 8:1-2. Gary was a strong and confident man of faith. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Brenham, TX, where his children were baptized. He later joined St. John Lutheran Church in Cypress, TX, where he was a member of the “Wine and the Word” small group. On March 17, 2015, Gary married his soul-mate, Janice Lynn Whitman, who he adored and who expanded his world with fun social outings and travels.

Gary attended Brenham schools and graduated from Brenham High School in 1975. His life-long curiosity for how things work led him to follow his passions to Arizona, where he graduated from the Arizona Automotive Institute in 1976. He managed Cypress Lawn and Turf for over 40 years. Gary was dedicated, hardworking, and always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who called him, giving him the reputation as "Mr. Fix It.”

He was a proud and loving father of three children, who he always joked around with, and to whom he passed down his wisdom and “good genes.” He always loved to make people laugh with his “dad jokes,” sarcasm, and goofy sense of humor. He loved the Astros and the Cowboys (especially when they won). He was intrigued by outer space and even owned a small piece of property on the moon. He enjoyed spending time with close friends and family, going to breweries and wine tours, traveling, investigating and problem-solving.

Gary is survived by his loving wife, Janice Whitman-Vierus; mother, Mercedes “Sadie” Vierus; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry (Darlene) Vierus; sister and brother-in-law, Linda (David) Lange; sister-in-laws: Nancy Nicholson and Cathy Williams; daughters and son-in-laws: Allison (Raul) Trevino, Emily (Waylon) Byers; son and daughter-in-law, Jacob (Pam) Vierus; stepchildren: Kayla (James) Rose, Aaron Whitman; grandchildren: Gavin Rose, Brazos Byers, River Trevino, Elijah Vierus; the mother of his children, Cathy Vierus; close friends: John (Julie) Klein, and Adan Perez, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren, and friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his father, Leon Melvin Vierus, father and mother-in-law, Cecil (Joyce) Curry, and brother-in-laws: John Nicholson and Michael Williams.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, from 10:00 am - 11:00 am, with memorial service to follow at 11:00 am at St. John Lutheran Church. 15235 Spring Cypress Rd, Cypress, TX 77429

Serving as pallbearers will be: Nicholas Vierus, Chad Gandy, Derrick Kramer, James Rose, Christopher Nicholson, and Jason Bain.

Memorials may be given to St. John Lutheran Church.

Gary will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He will alway be remembered for his unique, contagious laugh and kind, compassionate heart.
