John's obituary
Gangwei Lin, known to many of us as John, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026. John was born December 7, 1952 to Chou-Hsn Lin and Chey-Yi in Taiwan. His youth was spent in Taiwan where he pursued his love for tennis, studied law and received a law degree and was trained as an opera singer. In 1972 John played an epic tennis match for the Taiwan Davis Cup Team lasting more than 5 hours-which he won! He also qualified that year to play in the French Open and Wimbledon. John moved to the US in 1978 where he worked as the assistant men's tennis coach at TCU. From 1982-1984 John coached the Taiwan Davis Cup
Team. John settled in Salt Lake in the mid 1980's where he opened and ran several Piccadilly Fish and Chips franchises. John was a USPTA Certified Teaching Pro and spent many years teaching and coaching throughout the valley. It would be safe to say he has touched more lives through his love of the sport than can be counted. He was so good at making his students fall in love with tennis from the first ball strike and they never stopped playing. He coached and captained many USTA League teams and helped many of them advance to nationals. His legacy will continue on through the many lives he touched. Though tennis was his passion he was also an avid collector of Asian Art, antiques, books and many other items of interest-especially tennis memorabilia. He spent many a weekend combing through estate sales and loved sharing his "treasures". He also enjoyed his Sunday bus trips to Wendover and mastering the art of gambling-which he did very well.
John is proceeded in death by his parents and survived by his brothers Charles(Aeching), James (Sophie) and Eddie (Sharon). One nephew, Benjamin and his long time companion, Shauna.
Many of John's tennis friends and neighbors rallied around him the last months of his life helping him get to Dr. appointments, providing meals and friendship. Rebeccas Suelzle was his rock-helping him whenever the need arose and keeping
his friends and family up to date on John's condition. Many thanks to Rebecca for her dedication, selflessness and unconditional love. You are an angel.
