Gaither's obituary

Gaither Lee Edwards, 90, a Moore County native, passed away on Monday, May 4th surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Edwards grew up on his grandparent’s farm in Cameron and later moved to Carthage where he worked odd jobs including, Allen’s Drug Store, the movie theater and A & P. He proudly served his country in the US Navy aboard the USS General H W Butner. He loved sharing stories about his service during the Korean War, especially managing the ship’s store and laundry facilities. Returning home in 1954 he became involved with Sandhills Production Credit Association where he worked for over three decades, eventually rising to President. He loved helping local farmers and traveled a four-county region serving their needs. He became the first permanent resident of Whispering Pines in 1959 where he would go on to be elected as President of the first Village Council. During the 1970’s he built over 20 homes in that community. Mr. Edwards was very civic minded and involved in several community organizations: Mid-South Bank Board of Directors, Carthage Rotary Club, Carthage First Baptist Church serving as a deacon and longtime Assistant Sunday School Secretary, founding member of Whispering Pines Country Club, Past Exalted Ruler Southern Pines Elks Lodge, and Carthage Jaycees. In his retirement he worked as a real estate broker and utilities right-of-way agent. He is survived by his adoring wife of 41 years, Ann, children Michael Lee Edwards(John), Rodney Hardy(Anna), Rhonda Edwards, four grandchildren(Tyler Cockman, Victoria Hardy, Alexandria Hardy, Austin Lee Cockman), great grandchild(Jordyn Cockman) and his beloved Dixie. He will be interned at Cross Hill Cemetery, Carthage, NC. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Moore County Veterans Memorial, Inc., 1291 Cranes Creek Rd, Cameron, NC 28326.
