Gabriel's obituary

Gabriel Esquivel Jr., 57, died suddenly on September 11, 2018 in Charlottesville, VA.

Born September 27, 1960 in San Jose, CA, he was the son of Celia and Gabriel Esquivel Sr.

Gabriel was a lifelong photographer and loved the outdoors, but mostly he loved working with children. He was the first in his family to graduate from college, as he earned a degree in neurobiology from UC Berkeley. He never missed attending The Big Game from the time he graduated college and he loved the Golden Bears. He worked in the beverage industry and then became a stay-at-home dad at a time when this was unheard of. He later realized his true calling when he began teaching IT skills to children. His work with the children in the computer labs at Montclair School and more recently, at St. Joseph’s School in Pinole, CA gave him great joy. He was the scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 237 in Orinda, CA where he nurtured many boys who achieved Eagle Scout. He was the Men’s and Women’s Jr. Varsity Tennis Coach at Miramonte High School and loved by many coaches and children alike.

He was a gregarious and kind man who had many close friendships.
His devotion to his wife, sons, family and friends was always deeply evident. He knew how to be a friend and was there for anyone who needed anything.

Gabriel is survived by his wife, Jill Howie Esquivel who he was married to for 32 years, his sons Daniel of Charlottesville, VA and David of Champaign, Illinois, his mother and father, Celia and Gabriel Esquivel of San Jose, CA, his brothers Glen and Bill Esquivel of San Jose, CA, brother Steven of Copperopolis, CA, and numerous family and friends from around the globe.
