Fred's obituary

Frederick Peter Jungclaus was born on February 8, 1941, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was the son of William H. Jungclaus and Mary Elizabeth Powell. He was a graduate of Culver Military Academy (1960), Herron School of Art (1964) and Indiana University (1969) Bachelor of Fine Arts.

He grew up in Indianapolis, but moved to Martinsville, Indiana, to raise his family. He continued to live in Martinsville until 2017, when he moved back to Indianapolis due to declining health. Fred passed peacefully on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at Westminster Village North.

After college, Fred began working at the family construction company, Jungclaus Construction Company in Indianapolis, and did so for several years. He left the family business to pursue his passion of graphic design. He worked for several companies before finally opening his own commercial art business on East 14th Street in downtown Indianapolis in the mid 1970s. His work spans decades of clients and companies, logos, designs and renderings.

Aviation was his passion. He enjoyed both model building, flying remote control models as well as flying full-size aircraft. Over the years, he sold and flew ultralights and owned several different planes. His proudest accomplishment was building and flying a 7/8th scale replica British SE5a biplane, which he flew to many WWI fly-ins. He and his wife Martha were active in many reenactment events and were always dressed in their period era uniforms.

Fred was an avid dog lover and had many over the years. Some may remember his dog Sam who would share the office with him on 14th Street. Cats were never Fred’s favorite, but he tolerated them and over time he even had one he called his own, named Butch.

He touched many lives with his talent and humor and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife Martha Powell Jungclaus, daughter Anne Jungclaus Coyner (husband Kevin), son Karl Jungclaus (wife Kari), stepson Jeff Horton (wife Marcy), stepdaughter Susan Horton Barnes (husband Kenneth), 6 grandchildren, and former wife Sharon Rautenberg Gould.

A celebration of Fred's life will be Saturday, February 18, from 2–4:00 p.m., at Westminster Village, 11050 Presbyterian Dr, Indianapolis, in the Social Hall. This will be a gathering of family and friends to share our many fond memories of Fred. We encourage everyone to come with some good stories to share.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to be made in Fred’s honor to the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) Foundation in Muncie, Indiana. This was a special place for Fred over his many years as a modeler. The link to donate is: https://www.modelaircraft.org…. Any option is fine, we just ask that you include Fred’s name.
