Freda's obituary

On Thursday August 27, 2020, Freda Virginia Slater entered into eternal life at the age of 91 at home.

Freda was born on December 11, 1928 in Guthrie, to Arthur Loatus Fisher and Ida Lee Boggess.

She was a born again Christian, and was saved on July 28, 1998 at The Second Creek Community Church of Sissonville. She also attended Crossroads Community Church in Sissonville until she no longer could after two back injuries.

On August 8, 1946, she married her beloved husband, Hubert Slater. They owned a service station in Guthrie from 1959 until his passing in 1990.

Freda retired from the office of Dr. R. E. Hamrick. Her first public job was at Bonham’s Dairy, which was owned by her uncle and aunt. In the 1950’s, she was a manager at the Frontier Drive-In Theater. In the 1960’s, Freda was among the first group of female school bus drivers hired by the Kanawha County BOE. She also worked many years as a pharmacy tech at Lowman’s Drugstore in Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Slater; one stillborn son; mother, Ida Lee Boggess; father, Arthur Loatus Fisher; Great granddaughter, McKinlee Grace Petry; paternal sister, Dorothy Mae (Fisher) Howrey; maternal siblings, Betty Jo Phillips, Harold Arthur Ransbottom, James Guy Ransbottom and Everett Sherman Ransbottom; nephew, Arnold Asbury III; and daughter-in-law, Dina Slater.

Freda was a devoted mother, and survived by their three beloved sons, Harold Slater of Maryland, Jerry Slater (and wife Sandra) of Sissonville, and Karl Slater of Sissonville; maternal siblings: Mary Newhouse, Joseph Ransbottom, Loretta Smith, and Arnold Asbury II; Grandchildren: Jason Slater of Maryland, Amy Petry of Charleston, Kara Slater of Kenna, and Brittany Ratcliff of South Charleston; Great grandchildren: Jason and Alexis Slater, Carter and Camden Petry, Laylie Dunlap, and Jayden D’Arco, Jordan and Colson Ratcliff.

Freda loved all of her family, and enjoyed cooking, especially for holidays, and any time she could spend with family and friends. She was known for her feisty, yet funny sense of humor. She will be missed by all that knew and loved her.

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. on Monday, August 31, at Floral Hills Garden of Memories, Sissonville.
