Fred's obituary
Dr. Fred Schwartz, son of Nathan and Anna Schwartz and brother of Harold Schwartz (aka Peter Storm), died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, July 15, 2022. He was 92 years old.
Fred graduated from the Bronx High School of Science, and then he attended City College, where he received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Clinical Psychology. He then enrolled in Yeshiva University but was drafted into the army for the Korean War. After he was honorably discharged, he attended the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, where he received a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.
Fred went to work for David Rapaport at Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge, MA, and then from 1968 to 1974, he worked as a psychologist at Montefiore Hospital in NY. In 1974, he moved to New York Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in White Plains NY, where he was an Associate Professor and Head of Psychology.
Fred treated many patients over the years, including running a clinical program for patients with schizophrenia, was an expert in diagnostic testing, was a diplomate in clinical psychology, and taught and mentored postdoctoral fellows. After retiring from Cornell, he continued providing therapy to private patients until he closed his practice at the age of 89 years. Fred was a beloved mentor for several generations of psychologists, improved the lives of a huge number of patients and their families, and made a lasting contribution to the field of clinical psychology.
Fred is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Irene Schwartz, his children Lisa and David, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
