Five years .... My boyfriend then husband made slides of Chicago architecture for Franz and I often went with him to deliver said slides.  I subsequently took his class.  I learned everything I know and love about architecture from Franz.  I wonder what he would think about the direction higher education has taken.  He was a frank and open man, and talked to us like the adults we thought we were and wanted to be.  I think that might have gotten him in trouble with some of  today's students.
Frank was my drawing and painting professor from 1957 to 1961. Thanks to him,I really know how to draw! He was also a composer who set A.E. Housman ‘s poems to music as well as composing a song about a not so sterling Forester. He was also the best Whistler I have ever known. He will be missed.

I worked for the "physical plant" while at LFC. One day they sent me to do some painting in Young Hall. I was up on a ladder, painting a wall by hand, with a wide brush, when Franz came walking by, probably on his way to his office. When he saw me painting, he stopped, and explained to me the historical and aesthetic significance of the brush strokes that I was adding to the wall.

As an Educator and Mentor, Franz inspired me to pursue a career as a world famous architect, which I did. Except for the world famous part.

Thank you Franz for for your inspiration and guidance.

Franz had retired by the time I arrived at Lake Forest (class of '08), but he was a regular visitor to the Archives and Special Collections at the library, where I was assigned for work study. I got to know him while helping out with his various projects, such as scanning photos for lectures and that sort of thing. During my senior year I had the honor of taking part in a public presentation with him, which remains one if my proudest memories from college. He was always very interested in, and encouraged, my art history studies, which definitely helped give me the confidence to apply to graduate school and eventually become a curator. He had an insatiable passion for art history that could captivate anyone in the room.

Franz was my college professor, good friend and one of the greatest influences on the course of my life. He told me point blank that the independent study I did on architect David Adler under his auspices would one day be a book. Well because of Franz's encouragement and enthusiasm, I have written 4 books. If I could call Franz today, he would say "Salny, what are you writing now?"

I worked at Lake Forest College for almost 7 years in theVisual Communications Department. Franz became a regular visitor to our office and always had a smile, a story, and homemade cookies to share. He became a very special friend through the years and I will be forever grateful that I was able to share so much time with him at the college and after.
