Frank's obituary

Frank A Umphrey

Frank A. Umphrey passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 20, 2025, in Palmdale, California, surrounded by those who loved him. He was 89 years old. Born in Michigan, Frank later moved to Redlands, California, when his father was transferred for work. From a young age, he displayed a remarkable sense of independence and responsibility. In 1946, at just ten years old, he managed a paper route seven mornings a week, earning twenty-five dollars a month. He also worked as a caddie at the Redlands Country Club, where he formed lasting friendships and created some of the most cherished memories of his youth. After graduating from high school, Frank relocated to Pasadena, California, where he lived with his sister Ruth Hersey while pursuing studies in computer science. This early interest in technology would shape the course of his professional life. In 1966, Frank married Janet Ruth Umphrey. Together they welcomed a son, Eric Umphrey. The family later settled in El Segundo, California. Though Eric preceded him in death in 2024. Frank’s career led him to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo before he made Lompoc, California his permanent home—a place he would reside for more than four decades. He built a respected and impactful career in aerospace computer technology with Martin Marietta, which operated on leased property at Vandenberg Air Force Base. His work spanned some of the most pivotal and challenging moments in aerospace history, including the era surrounding the Challenger explosion. Frank’s dedication and technical expertise left an indelible mark on those he worked with and on the field itself. After retiring from aerospace, Frank embarked on what he often described as one of the happiest chapters of his life—working at Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez. For nearly twenty years, he was a beloved presence among coworkers and customers alike. His warmth, kindness, and genuine enjoyment of people made him a favorite among many who crossed his path. Frank had a zest for life that extended far beyond work. He was known for his love of classic convertibles—restoring and reselling them with pride—and could often be found at car shows admiring vintage craftsmanship. He enjoyed playing golf and had a passion for gambling, one of his favorite pastimes. An avid cyclist, Frank loved riding his touring bike through scenic routes. He was also a dedicated coin collector who never stopped searching for that elusive million-dollar penny. To those who knew him best, Frank was more than just accomplished—he was deeply loved. He was an amazing father, brother, uncle, stepfather, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Frank loved music, He had collections of CDs and LPS. He mediated daily to his favorite songs.

Above all else, he was known for his kindness, unselfish nature, and gentle spirit. Every conversation with Frank left others feeling calm and uplifted. He shared a special bond with one grandson—who asked far too many questions—and delighted in every moment spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His last great-grandchild held a particularly special place in his heart; nothing brought more joy to Frank than being surrounded by family. Frank is survived by his sister Linda Clifton; his stepchildren; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many dear friends who cherished him deeply. During the final year of his life, Frank was blessed with an extraordinary group of caregivers who became like family. Special thanks go to Marco and Joy—your compassion and love brought comfort not only to Frank but to all who loved him. Frank A.
