Background
Thank you so much for everyone's support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, we'd appreciate if you could donate to help with Poor Pierre's Fishing Club. DO NOT TIP EVERLOVED.COM - Processing Fee is included.
In 1963, a group of friends came together to purchase an island in Vermillion Bay, Ontario on the Wabigoon River for $500 dollars with the stipulation that the land be improved or built on. The original members, which included Frank Carter Sr., decided (likely over more than a couple of drinks) to call themselves Poor Pierres and named the group The Poor Pierre’s Marching and Chowder Society of the Upper Wabigoon River. In 1966, the group built an outpost cabin and several supporting facilities on the remote island. The group hoped this island could be enjoyed and shared by families and friends over generations while being maintained by members.
Frank Carter Sr. brought up his 8 children to the cabin yearly. After Frank Carter Sr.’s passing, Frank Carter Jr. became a Poor Pierre. Frank cherished the island and all the memories he had with his father and family. Frank would be the chief spokesmen of the island at social events, inviting anyone, and at times even demanding to those who were hesitant to head north and experience his love of fishing. He believed this island should be shared with anyone who had an interest in the wilderness or fishing. In Frank’s retirement, he went as often as he could, always working on some improvement project. To know Frank is to know his love of this fishing group and desire to share this experience. This island became a sanctuary to Frank with him regularly sharing stories of the ever-growing fish that got away.
Twelve members remain in this fishing club and have allowed hundreds of families over the generations to experience this remote slice of paradise. Over those many years, the cabin has required significant repair. Prior to Frank’s passing, he and the other members were finding difficulty maintaining the cabin due to remoteness of the location and the ability to find local businesses to help. There are multiple repairs needed to the island that, if untended, may jeopardize the safe use of the facilities. In life, Frank worried about the fate of the cabin and dedicated many trips to the sustainment of the island for the next generation of anglers.
Donations to Frank’s memorial fund will be directed to the Treasurer of the Poor Pierre’s Marching and Chowder Society of the Upper Wabigoon River and put towards the cabin that Frank held so near and dear to his heart. It will allow for all members and their many loved ones, including those of Frank, to continue to share these memories and pass down the traditions of family and, of course, fishing. Contribute
