Hans's obituary
Franciscus M. Bermel
Known to his friends as Hans and by his grandchildren as Opa, Franciscus M. Bermel passed away on January 25, 2025, at the age of 76.
Hans lived a rich and extraordinary life, brimming with adventure, love, and laughter. Born in Doornenburg, Holland, he embarked on his journey to America in 1966 with just $50 in his pocket. At the young age of 18, Hans moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he planted roots as a hairdresser for 60 years and built a life that brought joy to all who knew him. He founded the locally renowned Bermel's Hair Salon with his brothers and was known by all as a beloved member of the Memphis community. He had many notable achievements in his life including, helping to bring the sport of soccer to Memphis.
Hans was known for his infectious sense of humor and his unwavering dedication to bringing smiles to the faces of everyone he met. A lifelong soccer enthusiast, his passion for the sport was rivaled only by his zest for life and his determination to have fun along the way.
He was a loyal friend, a cherished member of the Bermel family, and a source of strength, laughter, and love for those fortunate enough to know him.
On January 23rd, Hans accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He experienced grace and inner peace here on earth before he passed away. We trust he is in the most beautiful place with his brothers playing soccer, being loved by his momma and daddy, with Billie and their son Graham, and with Judy and their twins.
Hans passed on January 25th at 1:20pm with his sister and granddaughter by his side. He is survived by his siblings Rena, Frank, Jozef, Maria, Gerard, Anna Marie, and Peter, his children Amy and John Michael, his 2 grandchildren, Taylor and Dillon, and his two great-granddaughters, Josie and Lucy. He is and forever will be loved and cherished in our hearts.
