Frances's obituary

Frances Galassi Slagle, a beacon of love, wisdom, and compassion, peacefully departed this world on Friday, July 21, 2023, at the age of 86. She was a cherished wife, devoted mother of five, a proud grandmother of three, and a great-grandmother of three.

Born on November 26, 1936, in Boston, Massachusetts, Frances embarked on a remarkable journey that touched the lives of many. On November 29th, 1958, she married her soulmate, James (Jim) Robert Slagle. Frances was a lifelong learner, achieving milestones that reflected her indomitable spirit—a nursing degree from Children’s Hospital/Boston College, a master’s degree in Psychiatric Nursing from Catholic University, and an MBA from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management.

Initially, Frances dedicated herself to Pediatric Nursing but later transitioned to Psychiatric Medicine, eventually managing Anchor House, a mental health center for women. Her career was marked by a deep commitment to caring for "her ladies," ensuring they experienced the joy of symphonies and Broadway shows. Her empathy for those facing challenges was boundless, and she persevered to improve their lives every day.

Frances and Jim's marriage led them to various corners of the country—Boston, Livermore, Washington, DC, and Minneapolis—before settling in Houston, Trumbull, Evansville, and Princeton. In each community, she became an integral part, leaving an enduring impact.

Renowned for her courage, advocacy, knowledge, and wit, Frances was a beacon of love for all, especially those often overlooked. A voracious reader, she shared her love of books with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, even paying library fines for young readers to ensure their continued access to literature. A dedicated advocate for women and girls, Frances was an early trailblazer for working moms and held a special place in her heart for all the mothers she encountered. Her lifelong love for animals was a testament to her compassionate soul.

Frances is survived by her husband of 65 years, James Robert Slagle, her five children: Paul, Mark, John, Mary Zappone (John), and Ann Valenti (Ed), her grandchildren: Frances Zappone Casella (Giancarlo), Anna Zappone Allaby (Nathan), and Sarah Zappone, and her great-grandchildren: Leo Casella, Nico Casella, and Olivia Allaby.

We were all profoundly blessed to have Frances intricately woven into the fabric of our lives. The world is undeniably a better place because of her tireless contributions to the lives of countless others. A celebration of her extraordinary life took place on July 22, 2023. In honor of Frances, her family kindly requests contributions to be made to the following organizations that held special meaning in her heart:

Girl Scouts

NAMI Mental Health

HBCU Foundation

May her legacy of love and advocacy continue to inspire us all.
