Fran's obituary

Frances Mitchell Dial, 73, passed away on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York. She was born in Charlotte on April 27, 1948 to George Linwood Mitchell, Jr. and Frances Moseley Mitchell. She lost her mother to polio in September of 1948. In November of 1949, George married Harriet Wilcox, who was mother to Fran for the remainder of her life.

After graduating from Myers Park High School in Charlotte, Fran attended UNC-Greensboro, The Manhattan School of Music, and finally The Juilliard School. She was a passionate and accomplished cellist and had the opportunity to study with Bernard Greenhouse (MSM), Leonard Rose (Juilliard) and Paul Tortelier in France and Germany. Fran married Daniel Dial in Mülheim an dur Ruhr, Germany in 1973 and they had two children together, Nathaniel Dial and Elsa Dial.

In addition to countless professional performances, Fran also led numerous youth orchestras including the Orchestra for Talented Youth as well as touching the lives of a great many private students in the greater New York area over the years. She also taught at the Rudolph Steiner School, where she created and led the Summer Interlude music program for young musicians, as well as in the Westchester County and Garden City public school systems.

Fran was kind, intelligent, witty and anchored by a deep faith. Her relationship with her church, New Life Fellowship, was a significant part of her life. As a leading member of NLF’s Paraclete Prayer Ministry team, Fran stepped into the lives of those in need within her community, taking on the burdens of those over whom she prayed in a way that has left many humbled and struck by grace over the years. Fran’s prayerful intercessions on behalf of her family and community in times of need brought hope and healing to many over the years.

Fran was predeceased by her parents and is survived by her husband, Daniel Dial, her children Nathaniel Dial (Candice) and Elsa Dial, siblings Woody Mitchell (Pam), Sandy Mitchell and Happy Rieth (Dennis), as well as beloved grandson Logan Wyatt Dial.

A memorial service will be held at Abby’s Lawn in Fort Tryon Park in NYC at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 29. A service in North Carolina will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to New Life Fellowship, 82-10 Queens Blvd, Elmhurst, NY 11373 (newlife.nyc).
