RIP FATHER MAIRIANI. Sing with the Angels.
Nikki Russo
2004, Ourém, Portugal
WOW. I had no idea that Fr. John Mariani passed away. I am over 3 years late in writing my condolences and for that I apologize. I had tried finding him a while back, when I found out that the house he was living in for years was sold to another person and then I lost track of him. He was quite the man. Funny, full of life and I had a very special experience when I first met him in Fatima, Portugal back in 2004. He invited us up to his Bed and Breakfast and on our way up the hill, we found a little kitten. Well, he was not going to let him stay out in the wild, so naturally, he took him back with us to the Bed and Breakfast. We clicked immediately and became friends instantly, sharing memories, stories, singing and eating together and it was seriously magical experience up there on the hill in Ourem. Father Mariani was a special person from what I knew of him and will remember our memories together always. Rest in Peace Fr. Mariani. xo

My dear Mariani Family, I just learned that it has been a year since Father passed to his eternal life. My husband and I met him at Our Lady of Peace before he moved to Fatima, Portugal for his beloved apostolate there.
We kept in touch, but time often changes the course of our lives, and we lost the regular communication previously held.
Nevertheless, Father Guilbert Mariani was never forgotten, and was carried in our hearts and prayers.
I (Rose), am now 80 years old, about to move to St. Joseph's in Texas, as my beloved husband of 54 years has gone before me.
I have tried to find Father and failed until today. When sorting through old letters I discovered the treasure of a beautiful letter
sent to me by him in response to one we had written to him - Oct. 26, 1998.
I am grieved at learning that I am too late to greet him in life, but consoled at knowing that he accomplished much for Jesus and Blessed Mother; leading so many souls to
Jesus through Mary, especially through Fatima; my dear husband and I gratefully being two of those many souls! May God be praised, and may Father's soul now be in the full joy of the glory of God!
We pray and remember you forever, dear Father Guilbert!

My condolences to the Mariani family and his Religious community. Knew John during his days at 1055 California and was delighted to have sublet his "pad" for a month one summer season. Alway gracious, kind and loving. May perpetual light shine upon him.
Linda: Please call me anytime at 415-816-3867 and we can talk about John's time at St Mary's College. Do you remember his white suit and Panama Hat ?

John knew my family owned car dealerships in San Francisco (we considered him a farmer's son; little did we know of the dried fruit empire !). So I called my Uncle and arranged for a 40's Rolls Royce Wraith (limo) for John's "last date" with a girl from Dominican. John insisted that I accompany them and take photos (especially at the Fairmont Hotel). John of course was dressed in Tux w tails; top hat and cane ! After dinner at "The Shadows" restaurant (all that I arranged); I left them w a bottle of Champ at about 1 am. I still have the pics somewhere; if I find them; I will forward to the family.

I remember John's fastidious room in the "basement" of Augustine Hall (we named it "The Zoo"). While he was out; we removed all his furniture and belongings to one of the large showers in the dorm and filled his room w balloons. When he can home; he laughed and popped balloons until he found the room was empty. He frantically looked everywhere and them discovered the entire contents in teh shower; set up exact;y as he left it (book open to correct page; pen on the desk etc. He let out a hearty laugh; thats when I turned on the water main and all eight showers came alive ! John took it all in stride. I also was responsible for procuring a Rolls Royce limo for his "last date" in San Francisco. But that's another story......
