Florence's obituary

Florence Winifred Walters-Watson was born March 4th, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to the union of George D. Walters Sr. and Minnie L. Owens Walters who later divorced. Her brother George D. Walters, Jr was born 3 years later.

She accepted the gift of Salvation from her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 8, 1973. She tried to live her life in honor, and obedience to Him. She also witnessed to, and shared the gospel with others almost every time that she had the opportunity to do so.

She received her formal education from Charles Brownell Elementary, and graduated from Parker High School (Chicago, Illinois) in the spring of 1959. She attended Woodrow Wilson Junior College (now known as Kennedy-King College) and Roosevelt University before she ultimately went on to attend Provident Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated from Provident in 1966 and started her life-long career as a registered professional nurse.

In June 1966, Florence married Roger S. Watson. To this union, Roger S. Watson II was born July 16, 1967. Although their marriage did not survive, Florence dedicated her life to being the most loving, devoted and supportive mother and grandmother that she could be to her son and his family.

She began her career as a registered professional nurse with Provident Hospital in 1966. She worked for several different hospitals and nursing agencies during her 46 year career before retiring from Central DuPage Hospital in 2012. During her nursing career, she was a long-time member of the Black Nurses Association and many other professional nursing and/or medical organizations.

Florence has been a loyal member of Rock of Our Salvation Church for well over 25 years. Her pastor was Robert Stevenson, and her primary prayer partner during this time was Nancy Parr. Over the years, she befriended countless Rock members and participated in Jubilee Ladies, bible study groups, friends and neighbors outreaches, Christmas parties, picnics, and many other church events.

Florence's home going was September 9th, 2020 at home, surrounded by family. She was preceded in death by her parents George D. Walters, Sr. and Minnie L. Owens, and her brother George D. Walters, Jr. She is survived by her son Roger S. Watson II (Pamela), grandchildren: Brooke A. Watson, Roger S. Watson III, Isabelle V. Watson, and Elisabeth O. Watson, first cousins: Jamana Milik, Lee S. Owens III (Patricia), Iva Owens, and a host of other relatives and friends.
