Florence's obituary

Florence “Pammuk” Newlin Johnson, 68, was born on July 29, 1957, in Noorvik, Alaska, to Robert and Maggie Newlin. She passed away on September 8, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family.

Florence grew up in a large and close-knit family in the village of Noorvik. She cherished her Inupiat roots and often spoke fondly of shared family memories. During high school, she developed a passion for basketball and enjoyed the camaraderie of playing the game.

In 1980, Florence married Michael Johnson in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, after meeting him at a basketball tournament in Kotzebue. Together, they built a life of love, resilience, and devotion, while raising three sons—Brian, Daniel, and Michael. Their lives were marked by hard work, travel, and countless unforgettable moments.

After moving to Anchorage, Florence worked in the family’s restaurants, The Sourdough Mining Company and The Peanut Farm. She also devoted herself fully to her home and children, finding joy in the simple pleasures of life—fishing trips with Michael, preparing her famous smoked salmon, and filling holidays with warmth, laughter, and love.

Family was always at the heart of who Florence was. She valued time spent with her siblings and carried forward a spirit of generosity that touched all who knew her. Her door was always open, and she was quick to share kindness with family, friends, and community alike.

Florence also loved traveling, often visiting Las Vegas, Minnesota, and the family’s home in Arizona. She and Michael shared early morning walks and long conversations, continuing to nurture their deep bond.

She was especially proud to be “Grandma” to her grandchildren—Aiden, Leo, and Emelia. Florence leaves them with a legacy of compassion, strength, and joy. She taught Emelia the art of making jewelry and to stand confidently in who she is, while encouraging her grandsons to embrace adventure and take chances. Some of their happiest memories together were spent on one-on-one shopping sprees, where Florence’s generous spirit truly shined.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Maggie Newlin; her sisters, Rhoda, Ruth, and Selma Newlin; and her father-in-law, Arnold Johnson. She is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Michael Johnson; her sons, Brian, Daniel (Andrea), and Michael (Stephanie) Johnson; her beloved grandchildren, Aiden, Leo, and Emelia Johnson; her sisters Genevieve Kratzer, Patsy Newlin, Rose Dunleavy, Carrie Newlin, Lois Newlin, Sheri Newlin; her brother-in-law Bob Johnson and brothers Gordon Newlin, Robert Newlin, Jr., Irvin Newlin, Michael Newlin, Eric Newlin; her mother-in-law Josephine Johnson as well as additional in-laws, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Florence “Pammuk” Newlin Johnson will be remembered for her unwavering kindness, boundless generosity, and the deep devotion she carried for her family throughout her life. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
