Florence's obituary
MRS. FLORENCE ELAINE OBOUBIA BREW (nee OKRAKU)
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.” 2 Tim 4:7-8
Florence Elaine Oboubia Brew (nee Okraku) was the third of four children born on the 20th of November, 1949 to Mr. Emmanuel Antwi Okraku and Mrs. Mary Aryikailey Okraku (nee Ankrah), both of blessed memory.
From her early years, she showed a commitment to her studies and showed promise of advancing in her academic pursuits. Her mother was a headteacher for many years and Florence must have acquired her love of school and teaching from her. Judging from her culinary skills in later life, she did learn from the times she spent watching and helping out in the kitchen in her home.
Nwaa, as she was affectionately called, was always of few words and yet had a great zest for life. She had an infectious laughter like her mother, and could always get those around her roaring with laughter.
She started her education at the Government Girls School, now known as Independence Avenue School. She later transferred to Mmofraturo Girls Boarding School in Kumasi. While there, she sat for the Common Entrance Examination, passed and was admitted to Wesley Girls High School to join her sister Mary for her secondary education. After completing her O’Levels, she continued on to St. Monica’s Secondary School for her sixth form education, from where she proceeded to University of Ghana, Legon.
During her university years, her faith in God, honed by her roots as a staunch Methodist, was further strengthened when she joined the University Christian Fellowship. She was a member of the Chosen Vessels Choir and also frequently went on outreach with the Prison Ministry team to Usher Fort Prison. She is also fondly remembered for her love of hymns.
After graduating from the university, she went into teaching, following in her mother’s footsteps. Florence taught at Wesley Grammar Secondary School and West Africa Secondary School, both in Accra.
In 1981, she established her own school, Star Avenue School, teaching and doing what she loved best until her untimely death. Her school impacted the lives of many young people as she ensured excellent academic and godly Christian standards.
Whilst at Legon she met Thomas Brew, and their friendship blossomed into marriage in 1975. Their union was blessed with five children, Thomas, Kathleen, Ewurama, David and Elaine Brew.
On April 25th, 2002, it was a great honor and public affirmation of her impact on the Ghanaian society when Florence was appointed by President J. A. Kuffuor, to be a part of the three-member Wuaku Commission. The Commission, composed of Mr. Justice I.N.K. Wuaku, Retired Justice of the Supreme Court – Chairman, Professor Kwesi Yankah, University of Ghana – Member and Mrs. Florence Brew, Educationist- Member, was charged to make a full, faithful and impartial inquiry into the circumstances of and establish the facts leading to the events and the resultant deaths and injuries in Yendi in the Dagbon Traditional Area of the Northern Region between 25th and 27th March, 2002. Their recommendations to Government contributed to the eventual resolution of the Dagbon conflict years later.
Florence was a devoted Christian, and a founding member of Faith Encounter International Ministries, where she served faithfully alongside her husband as First Lady and mother of the ministry.
Florence passed on to glory on 2nd August, 2021, at the Ridge Hospital.
She left behind her husband, five children, grandchildren, her sister Mary, brother Johnnie and many nieces and nephews.
